Repair Habit is a small, independent publication about household repair, run by Smit Sharma. This policy is a plain-language description of the very limited amount of information the site collects when you read a guide, use the contact form, or subscribe to updates, and the choices you have about that information at every step. If anything here is unclear, please contact us and we will rephrase it.

Information we collect

When you visit the Site, we automatically collect basic technical information that your browser sends with every request: IP address, browser type, device type, the page you visited, the page you came from, and the time of the visit. This information is used for security, debugging, and aggregate analytics. We do not link it to your identity.

If you submit our newsletter form, we collect the email address you provide. We use it only to send you our newsletter, and we delete it permanently if you unsubscribe.

If you submit our contact form, we receive your name, email address, subject line, and message. We use this information only to reply to you. We do not add you to any mailing list because you contacted us.

If you leave a comment on an article, the comment text, your chosen name, and your email address (which is never shown publicly) are stored on our server.

Cookies

Repair Habit sets only the cookies it needs to function and to count anonymised readership. These include:

• Essential cookies. Set by WordPress to maintain your session if you have left a comment, so you do not have to type your name again on the same browser.
• Analytics cookies. If we have analytics enabled on the page you are viewing, we use a privacy-respecting analytics provider that does not set tracking cookies across sites.
• Advertising cookies. If we are showing ads, our advertising partners may set cookies. These cookies are described in the advertising section below, and you can manage them through the controls we link to there.

Every modern browser lets you inspect, refuse, or remove the cookies a site has stored. Doing so on Repair Habit may affect small parts of the experience, such as remembering your cookie preference between visits.

Third-party services

We use a small number of third-party services to keep the Site running:

• Hosting provider. Our servers and database are provided by an external company. They process traffic logs on our behalf.
• Email delivery. Our newsletter is sent through an email provider, which holds your email address for the purpose of sending the newsletter.
• Analytics. We use a lightweight, privacy-respecting analytics tool to understand which guides are useful.
• Advertising. Some pages may show advertisements served by Google and other advertising networks. These networks may use cookies and similar technologies to show personalised ads, subject to their own privacy policies. See the next section for the controls available to you.

Advertising Personalization Controls

We work with advertising partners, including Google, to display advertisements on Repair Habit. These partners may use cookies, device identifiers, and similar technologies to deliver advertisements that are more relevant to you, based on your browsing activity on this Site and other sites you visit. The advertisements themselves are not chosen by us; they are selected and served by our advertising partners under their own privacy policies.

You have direct control over how advertising personalisation works for you. Google provides two official tools you can use at any time to review, change, or switch off the ad personalisation that affects your experience across Google services and the partner sites that use Google’s advertising products:

Blocking or clearing these cookies does not stop advertisements from appearing on the site. It only changes whether the advertisements you see are matched to your interests. Repair Habit itself does not collect, sell, or process personalised advertising data on its own; all such activity is handled by our advertising partners.

Children

Repair Habit is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided information to us, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.

Your rights

If you are in the UK, EU, or another region with similar laws, you have the right to ask us what data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to object to its processing, and to receive a copy of it in a portable format. We will respond to any request within 30 days. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at [email protected].

If you believe we have not handled your data properly, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the relevant data protection authority in your country of residence (in the UK, this is the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk).

Changes to this policy

If we update this Privacy Policy, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of the page. Significant changes will also be flagged at the top of the homepage for at least seven days, so you have the chance to read them before they take effect.

Google AdSense and third-party advertising

Some pages on Repair Habit carry advertisements served through Google AdSense. As a third-party vendor, Google uses cookies (including the DoubleClick DART cookie) to serve advertisements based on your prior visits to Repair Habit and to other sites on the internet. You may opt out of the DoubleClick DART cookie and personalised advertising from Google at any time by visiting Google Ads Settings.

Beyond Google, we may work with other third-party advertising networks and vendors that use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies to measure the reach of advertisements and to tailor the advertising content you see. Analytics

Traffic on Repair Habit is measured using Google Analytics 4, connected through the official Google Site Kit plugin for WordPress. Analytics tells us which guides are being read, on which types of device, and roughly where in the world the reader is; it does not tell us who you are personally. If you would rather your visit was not counted at all, the free Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on blocks Google Analytics from collecting data about you on every site you visit, not only this one.

Your rights under the GDPR

If you live in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area, or another region covered by the General Data Protection Regulation, you have the following rights over any personal data we hold about you:

• Right of access. You may ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, along with a plain description of why we hold it.
• Right of rectification. You may ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete.
• Right of erasure. You may ask us to delete your data, subject to any legal reasons we might need to keep it.
• Right to restriction of processing. You may ask us to stop using your data for particular purposes while a dispute is worked out.
• Right to data portability. You may ask for the data you gave us in a portable, machine-readable form so you can move it elsewhere.

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We aim to respond within one calendar month. If we cannot fulfil the request, we will tell you why in the same reply.

Your rights under the CCPA

If you are a resident of California, the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you the following rights, which we honour regardless of whether we would otherwise be subject to the Act:

• The right to know. You may ask what categories of personal information we have collected about you and the purposes for which it was collected.
• The right to delete. You may ask us to delete the personal information we hold about you.
• The right to opt out of sale. Repair Habit does not sell personal information in the ordinary sense of the word. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first, and a clear opt-out link will appear in this section.
• The right to non-discrimination. If you exercise any of these rights, we will not charge you differently, refuse service, or reduce the quality of what we provide.

Children under 13 (COPPA)

Repair Habit is not intended for children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone in that age group. This site is operated in line with the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. If a parent or guardian believes that a child has provided us with personal information, please email [email protected] and we will delete that information from our records within seven days.

How to contact us about privacy

For any privacy question, correction, or formal data request, the address to write to is [email protected]. A person reads that mailbox; it is not routed through a support desk or a chatbot. Please include enough detail to identify the request (for example, the email address on file, or a copy of the message you originally sent us) so we can find the right records.
