Repair Habit is independent. We do not have outside investors and we do not run sponsored content. We pay for our hosting, our domain, our newsletter provider, and the time of our contributors out of two revenue streams: advertising shown on the Site, and small commissions earned through affiliate links.

What is an affiliate link?

An affiliate link is a normal-looking link to a product or service that includes a tracking code identifying us as the referrer. If you click on such a link and end up buying something, the retailer pays us a small commission, typically between 1% and 10% of the sale. You do not pay any extra; the commission comes out of the retailer’s margin.

Which retailers do we use?

We participate in the Amazon Associates Programme, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon. We may also participate in other affiliate programmes operated by retailers we have purchased from ourselves.

How affiliate links affect what we write

They don’t. We choose what to recommend based on what we have used, what we have observed working in our own homes, and what we have honestly found to be the best option for a given problem at a given price point. We do not change our recommendations to favour higher-commission products. We will recommend a £4 tube of grease over a £40 specialty product if the cheap one does the job.

If a product we have linked to becomes unavailable, changes ownership, or stops being any good, we update the article. We try to keep our recommendations honest even years after we first published them.

How to spot affiliate links on the Site

Most affiliate links we use are to large retailers and follow predictable URL patterns. If you hover over a link before clicking, your browser will usually show the destination at the bottom of the screen, and you can decide whether to click through. Any post that contains affiliate links also says so plainly near the top.

If you would rather not

That is fine. You can search for any product we mention directly, in any retailer you prefer, and we will not be offended. The guides remain the same whether or not you click the link.

Advertising

Some pages on the Site display banner or in-line advertisements served by Google AdSense or similar networks. These advertisements are selected automatically by the advertising network and do not reflect our endorsement. We do not write our editorial content with advertisers in mind.

Questions

If you have a question about a specific affiliate relationship, ask us at [email protected]. We are happy to answer plainly.
