How to Clean Headlight Lenses That Have Gone Cloudy

Most cars made in the last twenty years have headlights made of polycarbonate plastic rather than glass. The reason is sensible: plastic is lighter, more shatter-resistant, and easier to mould into the complicated shapes that modern cars use. The downside is that polycarbonate yellows in sunlight. After five to eight years of outdoor parking, the once-clear lens has become hazy, dim, and faintly amber. The car looks tired, even if the rest of it is in good condition. More importantly, the headlight is now putting out a fraction of the light it used to, which matters on dark country roads.

The good news is that headlight haze is almost always purely on the surface of the plastic, and it is genuinely possible to restore the original clarity with materials you can buy in any car parts shop. The process is essentially a fine sanding and polishing of the outer layer, followed by a protective coating. It takes a couple of hours, costs under twenty pounds, and makes more visible difference to the appearance of an older car than almost anything else you can do.

Why headlights cloud in the first place

From the factory, polycarbonate headlight lenses are coated with a clear UV-resistant layer. This coating is what keeps the plastic clear. Over time, exposure to sunlight breaks down the coating, and once it is gone, the plastic itself starts to yellow and oxidise. The yellow layer is microscopically thin but enough to scatter the light, which is why the headlight beam looks weak and the lens looks dim even when the bulb is new.

You can slow this down by parking out of direct sun, but you cannot stop it. Eventually every plastic headlight goes hazy. The good news is that the damaged layer is shallow; once you sand it off, you reveal fresh, clear plastic underneath. Apply a new protective coating, and you have years of clarity again.

What you need

  • Three grades of wet-and-dry sandpaper: usually 800, 1500, and 3000 grit. A small assorted pack costs under five pounds.
  • A spray bottle with water in it.
  • Masking tape, the wide kind used for painting.
  • A microfibre cloth.
  • A clear UV-resistant sealant. Several brands sell headlight restoration kits that include this; alternatively, a clear automotive lacquer in a spray can works. Around ten pounds.
  • Optional but useful: car polish or a polishing compound, applied with a clean cloth at the final stage to bring out the shine before sealing.

Total cost for the materials, if you buy everything separately, is around fifteen to twenty pounds. A pre-packaged headlight restoration kit costs roughly the same and gives you everything in one box, which is easier for a first attempt.

The process, step by step

  1. Park the car in the shade. Working on hot plastic in direct sun makes the polish flash off too quickly and is uncomfortable on hot lenses. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal.
  2. Wash the headlights thoroughly with soap and water and dry them with the microfibre cloth. Any grit left on the surface will scratch deeply during the next step.
  3. Mask off the paint and trim around each headlight. Use the wide masking tape and overlap it generously. The sanding step is aggressive enough to scratch paint badly if the sandpaper slips, and you do not want to find that out the hard way.
  4. Start with the 800 grit. Wet the headlight thoroughly with the spray bottle, wet the sandpaper, and sand the lens in straight, even strokes, all in the same direction (horizontal is conventional). Keep both the lens and the sandpaper wet at all times. The slurry that comes off should look milky and yellow; this is the oxidised layer you are removing. Sand for two to three minutes, keeping pressure light and even.
  5. Wipe the lens clean. Inspect it. It should look uniformly dull and slightly scratched. If you can still see the original yellow haze, sand the affected area a little more. The whole lens should look the same matte texture.
  6. Switch to the 1500 grit. Wet everything again, and sand in straight strokes perpendicular to the direction you used with the 800 grit. So if you sanded horizontally before, now sand vertically. Continue for two or three minutes. The scratches will get finer.
  7. Switch to the 3000 grit. Sand in straight strokes again, perpendicular to the 1500. The lens should now feel smooth and look semi-translucent with very fine scratches.
  8. Wipe clean. If you have car polish, apply a small amount with the microfibre and rub in circles for a minute. This brings the lens close to fully clear. Wipe off the residue.
  9. Apply the UV sealant. If you have a spray, hold it 20 cm from the lens and apply two thin even coats, waiting a few minutes between them. If you have a wipe-on coating, follow the kit instructions. This step is the most important; without a sealant, the bare polycarbonate will haze again within months.
  10. Leave the sealant to cure for the time the product specifies (usually thirty minutes to several hours) before driving in rain.

The first headlight you do will take about an hour. The second goes faster, perhaps thirty minutes. The difference in clarity is immediate and dramatic; people often photograph the before-and-after.

What goes wrong, and how to fix it

The most common mistake is skipping straight to a polish without sanding. Polish alone will improve mildly yellowed lenses but cannot remove deep oxidation. If you try polish first and it does not work, do not assume the lens is beyond saving; just step up to sanding.

The second common mistake is forgetting the UV sealant. The freshly sanded plastic is the most vulnerable it has ever been, and without protection it will haze again within six months. The sealant is the difference between a one-year fix and a five-year fix.

The third common mistake is going too aggressive on the first grade of sandpaper. If you start with anything coarser than 800 grit, you can scratch the lens too deeply to remove with the later grades. Stay with 800 unless the headlight is genuinely badly weathered.

When professional restoration is worth it

For most cars, DIY restoration is entirely sufficient and the result is excellent. If the headlight has internal cracks, condensation inside the lens, or is heavily damaged (rather than just hazed), professional restoration or replacement is a better option. Internal damage cannot be fixed from the outside, and a cloudy lens with condensation behind it suggests the seal around the headlight has failed; that needs different attention.

Some professional detailers offer headlight restoration as a service for around forty to sixty pounds per pair, with a longer-lasting commercial coating. For a car you are planning to keep for several more years, this can be worth it. For a quick refresh before selling, DIY is more than enough.

How to keep them clear longer

  • Park out of direct sun when possible. UV is the primary cause of the original yellowing.
  • Reapply the sealant every two or three years, well before the lens shows signs of clouding again.
  • Use a wax or sealant when you wash the car, applied to the headlights as well as the paint. The extra layer helps.

The visible difference

The cleanest before-and-after I have seen was on an old Ford Focus that a colleague brought to work after a Saturday afternoon spent on the driveway. The car was sixteen years old. The paintwork had faded slightly, the wheels needed a refurbishment, but the headlights, suddenly, were as clear as they had been from the factory. The car looked five years younger, the night beam was visibly brighter, and the next MOT (which had previously failed on dim headlights) passed without comment.

It is one of those small jobs that makes you wonder why you waited so long.

You can, for very mild cases, and it is a popular online tip. Toothpaste contains a mild abrasive that polishes the surface gently. It works on slight haze but it cannot remove proper oxidation, and crucially it does not seal the lens afterwards, so the haze returns quickly. Toothpaste is a useful emergency clean before an MOT or a sale, but for a lasting restoration you need proper sanding plus a UV sealant. Save the toothpaste for your teeth and spend the fifteen pounds on the right kit.

If the lens looks clear but the beam is weak, the bulbs may simply be old and degraded; halogen bulbs lose around 20 percent of their output over a few years and look dimmer even when they are still working. Replace the bulbs first (replace both, even if only one looks weak) and see if the beam improves. If the beam is still dim, the lens is more likely the issue. A lens that is only slightly hazed can still scatter a lot of light without looking obviously cloudy. A careful polish and reseal often makes a measurable difference.

Yes, in a good way. The MOT tests headlight output and aim, and badly hazed lenses can fail on the output test. Restoring the lenses before an MOT regularly turns a potential fail into a pass, and the test cost stays the same. If your headlights have been borderline at recent MOTs, a fifteen-pound restoration is the cheapest pass-by-a-margin you can buy. Make sure the aim has not changed during the work; if the headlight housing has been removed for any reason during the restoration, have the aim checked.

Most consumer-grade sealants last between one and three years depending on parking conditions and climate. A car parked in a sunny driveway in southern England will need reapplication sooner than one parked in a north-facing carport in Scotland. The early warning is a slight matte appearance to the lens; reapply at that point and you avoid the need for any sanding. Once you have done the initial restoration, future maintenance is just a fresh coat of sealant every couple of years, which takes ten minutes.

On lit roads it is mostly cosmetic. On dark country roads it is genuinely a safety issue. Heavily oxidised lenses can reduce useful light output by 40 to 60 percent, which means you see significantly less of the road ahead at night. Stopping distance from speed is closely tied to how far ahead you can see, so dim headlights effectively make the car slower to stop in an emergency at night.
