How to Protect Your Car’s Undercarriage From Road Salt

Road salt does its worst work quietly, months after the gritters have finished. A short winter rinse routine is what separates an eight-year floor pan from a fifteen-year one.

Road salt is not a coating. It is a reaction. Once sodium chloride, brine, and whatever else Highways England is spraying that week gets into the seams under your car, it keeps pulling moisture out of the air and holding it against bare metal for months. The visible mess on the doors washes off in a Tesco car park. The stuff wedged behind the subframe mounts and inside the sill drain holes is the part that decides how long the car lasts.

I did not grow up thinking about this. I started thinking about it after paying for one MOT advisory that turned into a failure the next year, on a car that looked fine from three feet away. The panel above the rear axle had gone soft. The garage on the north-west Road pushed a screwdriver through it without leaning.

What road salt actually does under your car

The road salt used across the UK is mostly rock salt, roughly 94-97% sodium chloride with some grit and a little anti-caking agent. When it dissolves in melt-water it forms brine, which stays liquid down to around minus 9 degrees C. That brine is conductive, which is the problem. Rust needs three things: iron, oxygen, and an electrolyte. Salt water is a very good electrolyte, so the rate of corrosion on unprotected steel goes up by a factor of roughly five to ten compared to plain rainwater.

The Department for Transport guidance puts typical UK spread rates between 10 and 40 grams per square metre per treatment. A single motorway journey in January will coat your underside in a thin film of that mixture. It does not rinse off by itself. It sits in the horizontal ledges, the box sections, the folded seams around the floor pan, and the tops of the fuel tank straps. These are the places factory rustproofing is thinnest.

When to wash, and when not to

Timing matters more than product. Washing the underside once at the end of March is close to useless. By then, six months of brine has done its work. The point of a winter wash is to keep the salt concentration low the whole way through.

My rule, which I picked up from a retired bodyshop owner who used to run classic Jaguars, is this:

  • Every 7-10 days during any period the gritters are out. A cheap jet-wash pass under the car, no soap needed. Two minutes.
  • Within 24 hours of driving on a freshly gritted road above 40 mph. Motorway spray gets salt into the rear wheel arches and the boot floor seams. This is the one people skip.
  • Not when the temperature is below 2 degrees C. Water sitting in seams that then freeze does damage of its own. Wait for a milder afternoon, or use a warm wash bay.
  • One deep flush in early April before you put it away for the season, and one in October before the salt starts.

Jet-wash lances at supermarket sites are usually 100-140 bar, which is enough. Hold the lance around 30 cm from the underside and move it. Do not blast one spot for 20 seconds trying to shift caked mud, because you will punch water through cavity wax and drown a wheel bearing seal. Ask me how I know.

Underbody rinse: the actual method

Most car washes with an underbody spray charge an extra 50-100p for it. It is genuinely worth it, but only if you also do the manual pass afterwards. The automated underbody bars miss everything above the exhaust and inside the wheel wells. Here is the order I use at a jet-wash bay:

  1. Start with the wheels turned full-lock left. Spray the inside of the right front wheel arch, the inner sill, and the front subframe area for 45-60 seconds.
  2. Full-lock right. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Wheels straight. Walk the lance down each side sill, angling up into the pinch weld and the jacking points. This is where I have seen the worst hidden rust.
  4. Rear arches. Reach in behind the tyre and spray upward and forward. The mud shelf at the front of the rear arch is the classic hole-through location on hatchbacks.
  5. Under the boot floor. Aim across, not straight up. You want to flush, not inject.

Total time: 6-8 minutes. Total cost at a Morrisons or IMO bay: around £3-5 with tokens.

The ceramic coating myth, and what actually works

Ceramic and graphene coatings are marketed for the underside now. They are, for the most part, a waste of money there. The undercarriage flexes, gets stone-chipped, and lives in grit. A 9H ceramic layer, which is what the detailing world quotes, is a few microns thick and will not survive being sand-blasted by wheel spray for a winter. It will look present on paperwork and be functionally gone by February.

Bilt Hamber is the one I actually use, mostly because you can buy it in aerosols with a long wand attachment, and you can get into the sills of most cars through the plastic grommets without lifting the car off its wheels. Dinitrol is more common through professional shops. Waxoyl divides opinion because it can crack over time and trap moisture underneath, but if you top it up properly it is still fine.

Where to actually spray

Do the sills first. Every UK car has drainage holes along the bottom of the sills, usually covered by rubber grommets. Pull them, spray a slow burst of cavity wax in each hole with a wand, and put the grommets back. Then the doors (same idea, drain holes at the bottom), the tailgate, and the front chassis rails. Under the car itself, target the seams and welds rather than trying to coat every flat surface. Salt sits in seams.

What if the rust has already started

Surface rust on a subframe or floor pan is not a failure. Bubbling paint on an outer sill probably is. The rough test: if you push a screwdriver hard against the metal and it flexes or pops through, that panel needs welding, and no amount of wax will fix it. If it is solid but rough, wire-brush it, treat it with Kurust or a similar phosphoric acid converter, and overcoat with an underbody paint. Then keep washing.

An MOT tester works to DVSA guidance: structural corrosion within 30 cm of a seat belt mount, suspension mount, or steering component is a failure. That is your real deadline.

Yes, as long as you keep the lance moving and stay around 30 cm away. The looms and connectors under a modern car are rated for road spray at motorway speeds, which is far worse than a jet-wash. Trouble comes from holding the lance close to one point, especially near wheel bearings, CV boots, or exhaust sensor connectors.

In dry, cold conditions the salt film can sit there for weeks without much visible corrosion. As soon as it warms above freezing and the humidity comes up, that same film pulls moisture from the air and starts a slow reaction. Assume it is active for at least three weeks after the road looks dry again, which is why the timing of your wash matters more than the total number of washes.

For the sills, doors, and chassis rails, no. You spray those through drain holes and rubber grommets with a wand attachment while the car is on its wheels. For the underbody proper, yes, ramps or axle stands make a big difference because you need to see what you are coating. A pair of steel ramps costs around £40-60 and lasts forever.

Both. Plastic undertrays keep spray off the engine and improve aerodynamics, but they also trap grit and salty water against the bottom of the engine bay for months. If your car has one, drop it once a year in late spring, clean everything above it, and refit. Missing clips are why so many undertrays end up dragging by year six.

No, and aluminium can be worse in salted conditions because of galvanic corrosion where it meets steel fasteners. Land Rovers and older Jaguars are known for this. The wash routine is the same, but you also want to avoid steel wire brushes on aluminium panels, and use a dielectric grease on any fastener you undo.
