Common Car Care Mistakes That Cost You Money
Most expensive car bills are caused by small, well-intentioned mistakes repeated over years. These ten are the ones I see most often.
The thing about car-related mistakes is that almost none of them happen because the owner does not care. They happen because the owner has either been told the wrong thing or has copied a habit from someone else who was told the wrong thing. There is a lot of mythology around car care, and a great deal of it is leftover advice from cars built in 1985 that simply does not apply to anything built since.
I have spent the last few years collecting examples. A mechanic friend keeps an informal list of “things that come into the garage that did not need to.” Most of them are not dramatic. They are small habits, well-intentioned, that over five or ten years have added up to a thousand pounds or more in unnecessary repair bills. Below are the ten I see most often, in roughly the order of how much money they tend to cost when they go wrong.
1. Letting petrol run very low routinely
The fuel pump in most modern cars sits inside the fuel tank, and it is cooled by being submerged in petrol or diesel. Running the tank close to empty regularly leaves the pump running hot and dry, which shortens its life dramatically. A replacement fuel pump is a four-figure repair on many cars. Keep the tank above a quarter as a habit; the fuel costs the same, and the pump lasts twice as long.
The same logic applies, even more strongly, to diesel cars where running out of fuel can introduce air into the high-pressure injection system and cause expensive damage on top of the inconvenience.
2. Ignoring small dashboard warnings
Modern dashboards have two kinds of warning lights. Red ones, which generally mean stop and investigate now. Amber ones, which mean something is wrong but the car is currently safe to drive. The mistake is treating amber warnings as something to deal with “when I get a moment.” An amber warning often signals a problem that is contained at the moment but will escalate.
The classic example is the engine management light. If it comes on and the car is driving normally, it is often a sensor fault, an oxygen sensor coming to the end of its life, or a small misfire. Caught in week one, this is usually a thirty-pound part. Ignored for three months, the same fault can cause damage to the catalytic converter, which is a four-figure replacement. The cost of caring is small. The cost of waiting can be very large.
3. Using the wrong oil grade
Many people change their own oil, which is sensible, but use whatever oil is on offer rather than the grade the manufacturer specifies. Modern engines, especially those with variable valve timing, particulate filters, or hybrid technology, are designed for specific oil viscosities. The wrong oil can cause poor fuel economy in the short term and accelerated wear or filter clogging in the long term.
The handbook tells you exactly which oil to use, often something specific like “0W-20 ACEA C5.” Use that, not a generic “5W-30” from a supermarket promotion. The price difference between supermarket and correct oil is a few pounds. The cost of using the wrong oil, repeated for years, can be tens of thousands of pounds of premature engine wear.
4. Topping up coolant with tap water
When the coolant level looks slightly low, many people add a splash of tap water. It seems sensible. The water is wet, the coolant is mostly water, what could go wrong. The trouble is that tap water contains minerals (especially in hard water areas) that build up as scale inside the radiator and engine, gradually reducing cooling efficiency over years. Modern coolants are also formulated with specific corrosion inhibitors that get diluted by added water.
If you need to top up coolant, use the same colour and type already in the system, properly mixed with deionised water as the bottle directs. Cost: roughly six pounds for a bottle that will last years. Risk avoided: blocked radiator, corroded water pump, overheating engine.
5. Ignoring strange smells
A new smell in the car interior is almost always the car telling you something. Sweet, syrupy smell: coolant leak, usually from a hose, the radiator, or the heater matrix. Burning rubber: a slipping belt or a dragging brake. Hot oil: a small oil leak landing on a hot exhaust. Petrol smell: a fuel system leak, which is genuinely urgent because of fire risk. Mouldy smell from the vents: a clogged cabin pollen filter or a damp evaporator behind the dashboard.
None of these smells are normal. Each of them is a problem at an early stage. Ignoring them is the difference between a thirty-pound fix and a three-hundred-pound fix.
6. Cheap tyres
Tyres are the only part of the car touching the road. Cheap tyres have measurably longer stopping distances in the wet, lower mileage life, and worse grip in winter. The difference between a budget tyre and a mid-range tyre in a sudden braking test from 50 mph can be two or three car lengths. Two or three car lengths is the difference between hitting and not hitting whatever made you brake.
You do not need top-tier premium tyres on a daily driver, but a respected mid-range tyre is genuinely cheaper over its lifespan than a budget tyre, because it lasts longer and protects you better. Spending an extra fifty pounds per tyre is one of the best safety investments you will ever make.
7. Skipping the cabin filter
Almost every car built since 2000 has a cabin air filter, usually a paper element hidden behind the glovebox. It cleans the air coming into the cabin through the vents, and it gets very dirty very quickly because air is being forced through it constantly. A clogged cabin filter reduces airflow through the vents (so the heater and air-con seem weak), makes the system smell musty, and lets dust through into the cabin.
Replacement is genuinely a ten-minute job on most cars, the part costs around fifteen pounds, and it should be done every two years. Most people never do it once. Garages charge an hour of labour to replace it, which is wildly disproportionate given the actual time required; do it yourself with a five-minute YouTube video for your specific model.
8. Pressure-washing through wheel arches into wiring
Pressure washers are useful, but used carelessly they can force water past seals and into electrical connectors. The wiring around the rear wheel arches, behind the front bumper, and under the bonnet is reasonably well sealed but not designed for direct high-pressure water. Spraying directly into the connectors can short-circuit them, cause intermittent faults months later, or accelerate corrosion.
Keep the pressure washer nozzle at least 30 cm from anything that looks like a connector, sensor, or wiring loom. Use a wider fan setting around the engine bay. Treat the underside of the car gently.
9. Driving on a flat-spotted tyre after a long park-up
A car that has sat in one position for several months can develop slight flat spots on the tyres where they have been resting. Driving away gently usually restores them within a few miles. Driving away at speed can cause the flat spots to become permanent, with vibration through the steering wheel that persists for the life of the tyres.
If the car has been parked for two months or more, do the first ten miles gently, below 40 mph if possible, to let the tyres recover. For longer storage, the proper answer is to slightly over-inflate the tyres and move the car a few feet every six weeks. For very long storage, jack stands take the weight off the tyres entirely.
10. Treating dashboard plastics with the wrong product
The interior plastics in a modern car are usually a textured matte finish. Many products sold as “dashboard shine” leave a glossy, sticky, plasticky finish that attracts dust, reflects badly into the windscreen, and gradually breaks down the underlying plastic. Use a matte interior cleaner specifically designed for modern cars, not the high-gloss products from the 1990s.

The underlying pattern
If you look across all ten, a single principle keeps repeating: the cheap moment to act is always before something becomes serious. Sensors are cheap, catalytic converters are expensive. Fuel pumps cost less to keep cool than to replace. Cabin filters are fifteen pounds; the cost of breathing the dust they should have caught is harder to measure. The mistake is almost always the postponement, not the original error.
The good news is that all ten are quietly fixable just by paying a little attention. There is nothing here that requires expert knowledge. It requires only the willingness not to dismiss something small.

Check what is actually included in your service plan, not just the scheduled visits. Most owners discover that significant maintenance items are extra, and that is when surprise bills appear at service time.
Oil grade and level, coolant level and condition, brake fluid age (usually stamped on the cap), cabin filter condition (pull the glovebox out and check), tyre pressures and tread depth, all bulbs working, and a basic OBD scan for stored fault codes. Spend a Saturday on this in the first month. The total cost is often under fifty pounds in fluids and filters, and you reset the maintenance baseline. A used car bought without this check could be carrying any number of small ignored issues that the previous owner has handed on.
Occasionally, but rarely worth assuming. A warning light triggered by a momentary issue may go off on its own and not return, in which case it really was a glitch. A light that comes on, stays on, or returns within a few days, is the car genuinely reporting something. Treating warnings as glitches is the most expensive mistake on this whole list because it converts a small known problem into an unknown one, which then matures undetected. Read the code with a basic scanner, identify the fault, fix or monitor it. Do not just hope it goes away.
