How to Fix a Charging Port That Won’t Hold a Cable
A loose charging port is almost never broken. It is full of lint. The fix is a wooden toothpick.
The single most common phone repair request I get from friends and family, far ahead of cracked screens or dead batteries, is “my charging port has gone loose. The cable falls out unless I prop it up at a specific angle. Can it be fixed without a new phone?”
The answer in approximately 95% of cases is yes, in about three minutes, with a wooden toothpick and a bright lamp. The charging port is not broken. It is full of pocket lint that has compressed into a felt-like layer at the bottom of the port. The cable cannot insert fully because the lint is in the way, and so the connection is shallow and intermittent.
The remaining 5% are genuinely broken ports, but you only know which one you have by trying to clean it first.
Why this happens
Phones live in pockets. Pockets contain lint. The lint enters the charging port every time the phone is removed or replaced. Over months and years, the lint compresses against the inside back of the port, forming a dense pad that prevents the cable from inserting fully.
This affects every phone with any charging port. It is most noticeable on Lightning ports (Apple) because the port is shallower; USB-C ports (most Android, newer iPhones) also accumulate lint but tolerate it slightly better before failing.
The same issue affects headphone jacks (if your phone still has one), the microSD card slot, and the SIM tray edge. Anywhere a small opening can collect lint, lint collects.
What you need
A wooden toothpick (avoid metal; can short out contacts), a bright light source, and a soft place to set the phone. That is the entire kit.
Some people use plastic SIM removal tools or specialist plastic picks. These work too. The key is non-conductive: no metal, no graphite, no anything that could create a path between contacts inside the port.
The cleaning
Turn the phone off. Hold it firmly so it cannot move.
Hold the toothpick at a slight angle and insert it carefully into the charging port. The lint pad is usually at the very bottom of the port. Work the tip of the toothpick along the bottom edge, scraping gently towards the opening.
Pull the toothpick out. You should see a small clump of grey or beige lint on the tip. Remove it from the toothpick. Insert the toothpick again. Continue until no more lint comes out.
For ports with a lot of accumulated lint, this can take five or six passes. The first few passes pull out the most material; later passes get the stubborn bits at the back.
Once the port is clean, blow into it gently to remove any loose particles. Some people use a short burst of compressed air, which works well.
Try the charging cable. It should now insert with a clear, firm click. The cable should hold without needing to be held at an angle. If so, you have just fixed the phone for the price of a toothpick.
What if cleaning does not work
If after thorough cleaning the cable still does not hold:
Try a different cable. Cables fail in subtle ways: bent connector tips, worn strain reliefs, internal wire fatigue. A second cable that holds firmly while the first does not tells you the cable is the issue, not the phone.
Check the cable tip. Lightning and USB-C cables can have damaged connector tips that no longer make full mechanical contact. Look at the tip under a bright light; any visible bending, missing material, or asymmetry is a sign to replace the cable.
Check for damage to the port. Look inside with a torch. The metal contacts should be straight and intact. Bent contacts (often from a forced misaligned insertion) need professional repair. Corroded or discoloured contacts (often from water exposure) similarly.
If the port is visibly damaged, professional repair is needed. The cost is usually between sixty and a hundred and twenty pounds at a repair shop, depending on the phone model. For older phones, this may be close to replacement cost; for newer phones, it is much cheaper than a new device.
The prevention habit
You cannot fully prevent lint from entering the port; phones live in pockets. But you can reduce accumulation rate significantly.
Wear cleaner trousers (which sounds flippant but is genuinely true; older or fluff-prone fabrics shed more lint than newer ones). Keep your phone in a less linty pocket (front pockets often shed less than back pockets). Use a case that has a flap covering the charging port (some older cases had these; they are less common now).
Most importantly, clean the port quarterly. It takes thirty seconds. The reward is a port that never reaches the “loose connection” stage.
What about other ports
The same approach works for any small port. The SIM tray slot accumulates dust. The headphone jack accumulates lint. Even the speaker grilles benefit from a careful toothpick cleaning.
For speakers specifically, a soft brush works better than a toothpick; the goal is to dislodge debris without pressing it deeper.
When the issue is wireless
If you have a phone with wireless charging and the cable-charging is still failing after cleaning, you may have the option of using wireless charging as a workaround until you fix the port properly. This is not a permanent solution (data transfer still requires the cable, for example) but it can buy time before a full repair.

One genuine warning
Do not use metal in any small port on a powered device. The risk is creating a short circuit between contacts that can damage the phone, the charger, or both. A bent paperclip used to clear a charging port can destroy a phone in seconds. Wooden toothpicks, plastic SIM tools, or specialist plastic picks are the right tools. Spend the extra second to use the right thing.

The cable makes electrical contact with the contacts at the back of the port some of the time but not all of the time, depending on exactly how the cable is sitting. Clean the port thoroughly with a toothpick. If the issue persists after cleaning, try a different cable. If both cleaning and cable replacement fail, the port itself may be damaged.
Unlikely with a wooden toothpick used gently. The contacts inside the port are protected by their position; they are at the back and sides of the port, designed to be touched by the cable connector. A toothpick scraping along the bottom and sides of the port rarely contacts them. Avoid pressing hard, avoid metal tools, and you will almost certainly do no harm.
Sometimes, by a repair shop. Most often a bent port needs replacement of the entire port assembly, which is a soldering job inside the phone. This is repairable but professional work; not a DIY project for most people. The cost is usually around sixty to a hundred pounds depending on phone model. If your phone is otherwise fine, it is worth doing; if your phone is approaching end of life anyway, replacement may make more sense.
Test with a second known-good cable. If the second cable works perfectly with no looseness, your original cable is at fault. If the second cable has the same issue, the phone port is at fault. If neither cable holds well, the port is at fault. This test takes thirty seconds and saves a lot of guessing. Always have a second cable available; they are cheap insurance.
Water-damaged ports often show discolouration on the contacts inside. Use a torch and look carefully. Sometimes the damage is purely cosmetic and the port still works; sometimes the corrosion has reached the contacts and the port no longer connects reliably. Light corrosion can sometimes be cleaned with a cotton swab dampened with isopropyl alcohol (with the phone OFF). Heavy corrosion needs professional cleaning or port replacement. Prevent recurrence by keeping the phone away from water; modern water-resistant phones are not fully waterproof.
