If you ask ten people how to charge a smartphone properly, you will get twelve different answers. Most of them will be confidently wrong. The folk wisdom around phone charging is a curious mixture of outdated advice from older battery types, marketing claims from accessory makers, and observations that happened to be true but were misunderstood as causes.

Let me work through what actually matters, based on how modern lithium-ion batteries (the kind in every phone made in the last 15 years) actually work.

You do not need to drain it to zero

This piece of advice is wrong, and dates from the nickel batteries of the 1990s. Nickel batteries genuinely benefited from full discharge cycles. Lithium-ion batteries do not. In fact, draining a lithium-ion battery to zero is actively harmful.

Modern phone batteries last longest when they are kept somewhere in the middle of their charge range, ideally between 20% and 80%. The deeper the discharge, the more stress on the battery’s chemistry. The full 100-to-0 cycle counts as a full “cycle” in terms of degradation; two cycles from 100% to 50% also count as one full cycle. So shallow discharges are kinder than deep ones.

Practical takeaway: if your phone hits 20% and you can plug it in, do so. Do not wait for it to die before charging.

You do not have to charge to exactly 100% either

The flip side of the same coin: keeping a battery at 100% for long periods stresses it almost as much as draining it. The damage is most pronounced when the battery is held at 100% while warm (for example, charging overnight in a hot room).

Many modern phones have features that address this. iPhones with iOS 13 and later have “Optimised Battery Charging” that pauses at 80% during overnight charging and only completes to 100% just before your usual unplug time. Many Android phones (Samsung, OnePlus, Pixel) have similar features.

Enable these features. They cost nothing and meaningfully extend battery life.

Wireless charging is not significantly worse

For a long time, wireless charging had a reputation for being harder on batteries because it generates more heat. This is technically true but the effect is small. Modern wireless chargers are reasonably efficient, and modern phones have temperature monitoring that throttles charging if things get too hot.

The bigger issue with wireless charging is convenience: it is often slower, which is sometimes preferable for the battery anyway. If you wireless charge overnight, you are usually in the slow-charging zone, which is gentlest for the battery.

Wireless charging is fine. It is not as efficient as cable charging, but the battery health difference is not meaningful for normal use.

Fast charging is more nuanced

“Fast charging” technologies like Quick Charge and similar can put 50% into a phone in 15 minutes. They do this by pushing high current at high voltage, which generates significant heat.

Heat is the single biggest enemy of battery health. So fast charging, all else equal, is slightly worse for long-term battery life than slow charging. But the difference is not enormous: a phone fast-charged regularly might lose 5-10% more capacity over three years than the same phone slow-charged.

The practical advice: use slow charging when you can (overnight, when the phone is on the desk for hours). Use fast charging when you need it (a quick top-up before going out, on a road trip). Do not feel guilty about either.

The cable and charger do matter

Cheap, non-branded chargers can deliver dirty power: voltage that is unstable, current that exceeds specifications under load, and sometimes shorts that destroy the charging circuitry. Over time, these can damage the battery management chip and the battery itself.

Use the charger that came with your phone, the manufacturer’s official accessories, or third-party chargers from established brands (Anker, Belkin, Apple, Google, Samsung). These are reasonably priced and reliable.

The cable matters too. Cheap unbranded cables can be poorly made, with thin internal wires that overheat, intermittent connections that cause unstable charging, or missing data lines that prevent fast charging from working at all. A quality cable lasts years; a cheap one fails in months.

Temperature is the bigger story

If you take only one thing from this article: keep your phone cool when it is charging. The combination of charging current heating the battery and warm ambient temperature is significantly more damaging than either alone.

Do not charge your phone:

  • Under your pillow at night (a real risk; suffocates heat and can cause house fires)
  • On a hot windowsill
  • Inside a hot car
  • Next to a radiator
  • Inside a heavy case that traps heat (consider removing the case during charging in summer)

If your phone gets uncomfortably warm during normal charging, something is wrong. Either the charger is faulty, the cable is failing, or the phone has an issue. A normally-functioning phone should stay only slightly warm during charging.

How to interpret battery health

Most phones now show actual battery health. On iPhone: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. On Android: varies by manufacturer; many have it under Settings > Battery or Settings > Device care.

The “maximum capacity” figure tells you what percentage of the original capacity you are at. New phones start at 100%. After a year, expect around 90-95%. After two years, around 85-90%. After three to four years, around 75-85%.

Below 80%, you will start noticing visibly shorter battery life. Below 70%, replacement makes sense. Battery replacement (usually 50-100 pounds at a repair shop) restores the phone to nearly new performance for a fraction of the cost of a new device.

What does not matter

Whether you plug in the cable or the wall side first. Doesn’t matter.

Whether you leave the phone plugged in once it reaches 100%. Doesn’t matter much if the room is cool; matters more if the room is warm. Use optimised charging if available.

Whether you use the phone while charging. Slightly increases heat generation but not significantly. Fine for normal use.

One small habit that matters more than you would think

Most of us charge our phones in the same place every day. The cable lives there. The phone goes there. The habit is automatic. The single biggest improvement many people can make is to choose that location carefully: cool, away from bedding, not on top of other electronics that generate heat, with the phone lying flat (not propped vertically against a warm surface). The same nightly habit done in a slightly better location pays compound interest over years.

Check the battery health percentage; if it is below 80%, consider battery replacement.

Yes, as long as the room is reasonably cool and the phone is on a hard surface (not under a pillow or under bedding). Modern phones manage their own charging carefully. The risk you should care about is fire risk from a phone overheating in soft bedding; that is a real danger, not from the battery being plugged in but from being unable to dissipate heat.
