A slow PC is rarely past its useful life. Six checks usually bring it back, and none require new hardware.

The desktop PC in my study is eleven years old. It runs Windows 11, browses fluidly, edits photos, and does the bulk of my actual work. It would have been thrown out three times by now if I had followed conventional upgrade cycles. Instead, it has had a few small interventions over the years, and it remains genuinely capable.

Slow PCs are almost never beyond saving. The hardware in even a decade-old PC is still capable for normal home use; what slows them down is software accumulation, storage filling up, hardware that has not been cleaned, and a few common configuration issues. Working through the list below brings most slow PCs back to a usable speed.

1. Free up storage space

This is the single biggest factor for most slow PCs. A hard drive or SSD that is more than 85% full slows everything down. The operating system needs free space for swap files, temporary files, indexing, and many small operations that happen constantly.

Open File Explorer. Right-click on your main drive (usually C:). Select Properties. Look at the free space percentage.

If you are over 85% full, take action:

  • Run Windows Disk Cleanup (right-click the drive, Properties, Disk Cleanup, then “Clean up system files”)
  • Uninstall programs you no longer use (Settings > Apps > Installed apps; sort by size)
  • Empty the Recycle Bin
  • Move large files (videos, archives, photos) to an external drive or cloud storage
  • Clear browser caches and downloads folders

Aim for at least 20% free space. The performance difference is often dramatic.

2. Stop unnecessary startup programs

Many programs install themselves to start automatically when Windows boots, even when you do not need them running constantly. Each one adds to boot time and consumes memory in the background.

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc). Click the Startup tab. You will see a list of programs that auto-start, with their impact rating.

Disable anything labelled “High” impact that you do not actively need at boot. Common candidates: Spotify, Steam, gaming clients, manufacturer utility software, OneDrive (if you use it manually), various manufacturer “helper” programs.

Be cautious with antivirus software, audio drivers, and anything labelled as a Microsoft system component. When in doubt, search for the program name first to understand what it does.

The result of trimming startup programs is faster boot times and more available memory during normal use.

3. Clean the inside

Desktop PCs accumulate dust inside the case over years. The dust forms a felt-like layer on the CPU heatsink, the graphics card fans, and the case fans. Cooling becomes less effective, the CPU throttles itself to prevent overheating, and performance drops.

Power down the PC. Unplug everything. Move it somewhere you can work (a garage or balcony is ideal because the dust is unpleasant).

Open the case. Use compressed air in short bursts to blow dust out of: the CPU heatsink, the graphics card fans, the case intake and exhaust fans, the power supply intake. Hold each fan still while spraying so it does not spin freely.

If the dust is heavy, follow up with a soft brush. Wipe accumulated dust off internal surfaces with a microfibre cloth.

The cleaning takes about thirty minutes for a PC that has not been touched in years. The temperature improvement is usually 10-20 degrees Celsius, which translates directly into restored performance.

4. Check for hardware bottlenecks

For a PC that feels slow even after cleanup, the bottleneck may be hardware:

Mechanical hard drive. If your PC still has a spinning hard drive rather than an SSD, an SSD upgrade is the single most transformative thing you can do. The difference is not subtle; PCs feel completely different. Cost: 50-100 pounds for a 1TB SSD. Installation requires cloning the existing drive or fresh OS install.

Insufficient RAM. 4GB is genuinely too little for modern Windows 10/11. 8GB is the minimum for comfortable use. 16GB is ideal for most users. Adding RAM is straightforward on most desktops (slot it into available memory slots). Cost: 30-80 pounds.

Old CPU. If your PC is more than seven or eight years old and the CPU was budget at the time, you may have reached the practical limits of what software optimisation can do. CPU upgrades on older systems often require new motherboard and RAM, which approaches the cost of a new system.

5. Reset Windows (the nuclear option)

If you have worked through everything else and the PC still feels slow, a Windows reset clears accumulated configuration and starts fresh.

Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC. Choose “Keep my files” to preserve your documents, or “Remove everything” for a complete clean.

After the reset, install only the programs you actively need. Many PCs that felt hopeless feel dramatically faster after this reset.

Back up everything first regardless. A reset is irreversible; recovering from a backup is easy.

6. Check for malware

Persistent slowness can sometimes indicate malware. Windows Defender (built-in) is good enough for most users; make sure it is current and run a full scan.

For more thorough scans, free tools like Malwarebytes (the free version) catch things Defender sometimes misses. Run one of these as a second opinion if Defender comes up clean but the PC still behaves strangely.

Symptoms of malware that go beyond simple slowness: pop-up ads outside the browser, the browser homepage changing on its own, unfamiliar programs appearing in the system tray, the cursor moving without input. Any of these is a strong sign to take more aggressive action, possibly including a Windows reset.

What about “PC tune-up” software?

Most commercial “PC cleaner” software is unnecessary or actively harmful. The legitimate cleanup tasks (clearing cache, defragmenting, registry cleanup) can be done with built-in Windows tools at no cost. Many commercial tools also bundle adware or change settings aggressively.

The reliable free alternatives: built-in Windows Disk Cleanup, the free CCleaner (use with caution; avoid the bundled offers), Malwarebytes free for malware scans. Stay away from anything that promises to “speed up your PC by 300%” or runs aggressive ads.

The longer view

Most desktops that are properly maintained reach ten to twelve years of useful life. The pattern is typically: original use for three to five years, an SSD upgrade and RAM expansion around year five, ongoing maintenance, then replacement around year ten when the CPU genuinely cannot keep up.

The total cost over that period (initial purchase plus upgrades) is significantly lower than buying a new PC every three years. The performance differential is also smaller than the headline specs suggest; a five-year-old PC with an SSD and 16GB of RAM often feels indistinguishable from a brand new mid-range PC for most home tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions

For spinning hard drives, yes, occasionally; Windows does this automatically by default. For SSDs, no; defragmenting an SSD provides no benefit and slightly reduces its lifespan. Check what kind of drive you have (Settings > System > About will not tell you; you may need to check via Disk Management or third-party tools). Most PCs sold in the last five years have SSDs; older PCs likely have spinning drives.

For a PC currently running on a mechanical hard drive, the difference is transformative. Boot times drop from a minute or more to ten to twenty seconds. Programs open almost instantly instead of taking five to fifteen seconds. The whole PC feels responsive in a way it cannot when waiting on a spinning disk. For a PC already running on an SSD, additional SSD upgrades give smaller benefits. SSD is the single biggest hardware upgrade in terms of perceived speed.

For most home users, no. Windows Defender has improved substantially in recent years and now performs well in independent tests. Combined with cautious browsing habits and not opening suspicious email attachments, Defender provides reasonable protection. Add a second tool like Malwarebytes if you want extra confidence; both can run together. Paid antivirus subscriptions offer marginal additional protection for typical users.

Start with a full restart, then immediately open Task Manager to see what is consuming resources. The slowest moments are often early after boot when many programs are starting; let the PC settle for a few minutes before running cleanup tools. If even that fails, boot into Safe Mode (hold Shift while clicking Restart from the Start menu, then Troubleshoot > Advanced > Startup Settings > Safe Mode). Safe Mode runs only essential drivers and can let you uninstall problematic software or run scans that the normal mode could not.

Modern SSDs in normal home use typically last 7-10 years before the cells begin to wear out, longer for high-end drives. Most SSDs report their health status via SMART monitoring; tools like CrystalDiskInfo (free) show this. Watch for warning levels; an SSD nearing end of life will warn you well before it fails. When that happens, replace it; SSDs do fail eventually and unlike hard drives, the failure can be more abrupt.
