The laptop I am writing this on is six years old. The battery still holds about 70% of its original capacity. The same model in a friend’s hands lasted three years before the battery was so degraded that the laptop had to be plugged in constantly. The difference is not luck. It is a small handful of charging habits that nobody mentions when you buy the thing.

Lithium-ion batteries (which is what every laptop made in the past decade has) are not the same as the older nickel batteries our parents had in their first mobile phones. The rules for keeping them healthy are almost the opposite of the rules people learned in the 1990s. Let me run through what actually matters, in roughly the order of impact.

Heat is the enemy, more than cycles

The single biggest factor in lithium-ion battery degradation is heat. A battery that lives most of its life at room temperature (around 20 degrees) will last roughly twice as long as one that spends a lot of time at 40 degrees. A battery that gets to 50 degrees regularly will degrade three or four times faster than one kept cool.

Laptops generate heat when they work hard. The battery sits inside or under the laptop. When you do something demanding (gaming, video editing, anything that spins up the fans), the battery gets warm whether you are charging it or not.

What this means in practice: avoid using your laptop on a soft surface that blocks the vents (a bed, a sofa cushion, your lap covered with a blanket). Use a hard surface or a laptop stand that allows air to flow underneath. If you do intensive work, consider a cooling pad with quiet fans; even a basic one for fifteen pounds makes a measurable difference.

Storing a laptop in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill, or near a radiator is genuinely bad for the battery. So is leaving it on top of a heat-generating tower PC or a games console.

The 20-to-80 rule

Lithium batteries last longest when they are kept between roughly 20% and 80% of full charge. The chemical stress on the battery is highest at the extremes of charge: very low and very high. Keeping it in the middle stretches the life dramatically.

For most users, this means: do not let your laptop run all the way to zero, and do not keep it plugged in at 100% for days on end. The second part is the bigger issue for most people, because most laptops live plugged in at a desk most of the time.

Many modern laptops have a setting that limits the maximum charge to 80% (sometimes called “battery health mode” or similar). On Apple silicon Macs it is built in and automatic. On Windows laptops from Lenovo, Dell, HP, Asus, and others, there is usually a “battery conservation” or “Vantage” app option to enable it. Turn this on if you mostly use your laptop at a desk.

You will give up about 20% of your unplugged runtime when you do this. In exchange, your battery will last roughly twice as long before it needs replacing.

The myth about needing to “calibrate”

Old advice tells you to occasionally let the battery run all the way to zero, then charge fully, to “calibrate” it. This was true for nickel batteries. It is false for lithium-ion batteries, and actively harmful.

Modern laptop batteries have a built-in management chip that tracks state of charge accurately. They do not need calibration. Letting one run to zero stresses it and shortens life. Charging it to 100% and holding it there does the same.

Forget calibration. Worry about temperature and the 20-to-80 rule instead.

How to charge for travel

If you know you are going to need a full day’s runtime tomorrow, charging to 100% the night before is fine. The damage from being at 100% is proportional to time spent there; a few hours at full charge before you unplug it is not meaningful. The bad pattern is leaving it at 100% for weeks at a time.

Many modern laptops have an “optimised charging” mode that learns your habits and only tops up to 100% just before you usually unplug. Enable this if your laptop supports it.

Storage rules

If you are going to set a laptop aside for months (a spare device, a work laptop while you are on extended leave), the right storage charge is around 50%. Do not put it away fully charged. Do not put it away empty. Top up to roughly half charge, power it down, and store it somewhere cool and dry.

Check on it every three to six months. If the charge has fallen below 20%, plug it in briefly to top up to around 50% again. Lithium batteries left fully discharged for long periods can enter a state where they refuse to recover.

Power adapters and cables

Use the manufacturer’s adapter, or a reputable third-party one that matches the wattage and voltage spec. Cheap unbranded power adapters from market stalls or auction sites can deliver dirty power that stresses the charging circuitry. Over time, that can damage both the battery and the laptop itself.

USB-C laptops are more forgiving here because the spec is well-defined, but the principle still holds: cheap, badly built chargers cost less than they save. A friend who repairs laptops for a living in a small shop in Bristol once told me he has seen more battery failures from poor chargers than from any other single cause.

When the battery is past saving

Lithium batteries have a usable life of roughly 500 to 1000 full charge cycles. After that, capacity drops below 80% of original and the runtime starts feeling genuinely short. For most users, that is three to five years of normal use, longer with the habits above.

When the battery reaches the end, replacement is usually possible and almost always cheaper than a new laptop. For older laptops with user-replaceable batteries, the swap takes five minutes and a new battery costs forty to ninety pounds. For modern laptops with internal batteries, replacement is a job for a repair shop and costs between eighty and two hundred pounds depending on the model. Even at the higher end, that is much less than a new laptop.

What does not actually matter

A few things often debated in forums turn out to be roughly irrelevant.

  • Whether you charge in short bursts or long sessions. The total time at high charge matters, not how it is delivered.
  • Whether you use the laptop while it is plugged in. Modern laptops manage this fine.
  • Whether you use “fast charging” if available. Fast charging produces a little more heat, but if temperature is controlled it has minimal impact.

Focus your attention on heat, the 20-to-80 charge range, and not leaving the laptop fully charged or fully empty for long periods. Those three habits will give you the longest possible battery life from any laptop. Everything else is detail.

No, this is fine. Modern laptops are designed to be used while plugged in. The only consideration is heat: if the laptop runs warm during intense use, both the battery and the charging process generate additional heat, which can stress the battery. Use on a hard surface with good ventilation, and consider a cooling pad if you do extended intensive work while plugged in.

For older laptops with removable batteries (a panel on the bottom that pops off), yes, in two minutes. For modern laptops with internal batteries glued or screwed inside, the answer depends on your comfort level with electronics work. Some are accessible with a screwdriver and patient disassembly; others require specialised tools and adhesive removal. For most people, a local repair shop will do the job in under an hour for a reasonable fee. Manufacturer replacement is also an option but usually more expensive.

On a Mac: hold the option key while clicking the battery icon, or go to System Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On Windows: open Command Prompt and run "powercfg /batteryreport"; this generates an HTML file with detailed battery stats. The key number is current full charge capacity versus design capacity. If you are at 80% or above, your battery is healthy. Below 70%, you are likely noticing degraded runtime and may be due for a replacement within a year or so.
