Modern electronic devices are remarkably durable. The processors and chips inside a phone, a laptop, or a games console will reliably perform their work for fifteen to twenty years if conditions are right. The reason almost none of them actually last that long is not a manufacturing flaw; it is a combination of avoidable user habits that quietly damage devices over time.

I keep a mental list of the most damaging habits I encounter when helping friends and family with their devices. The same mistakes appear repeatedly, and each one shortens device life by years. Knowing what they are is most of the cure.

Mistake one: heat exposure

The single biggest killer of consumer electronics is heat. Lithium-ion batteries degrade twice as fast at 40 degrees as they do at 20. Processors run with reduced reliability when constantly hot. Soldered connections fatigue with thermal cycling.

The most common causes of heat damage I see:

  • Phones left in parked cars on warm days
  • Laptops used on bedding or thick rugs that block the vents
  • Consoles in closed media cabinets with poor ventilation
  • Charging devices inside thick cases on warm days
  • Storing devices on sunny windowsills

Each of these contributes a small amount of damage on each exposure. Over years, the damage accumulates into devices that fail earlier than they should.

The fix is awareness. Notice where your devices live. If you can feel a device is warm to the touch, it is too warm and you should change the situation.

Mistake two: deep discharge cycles

Letting a lithium-ion battery run all the way to zero is harmful. The deeper the discharge, the more chemical stress on the battery. Phones that regularly hit 0% age much faster than phones that are usually plugged in around 20-30%.

This is a habit that goes back to older battery technology where deep discharges were beneficial. They are not now. Charge when convenient, before the battery gets desperate.

Mistake three: ignoring filters and vents

Anything with a fan needs the airflow to be unobstructed. Laptops, game consoles, desktop PCs, even some routers and Wi-Fi access points all have filters or vents that accumulate dust.

Blocked airflow means the device runs hotter than designed, the components age faster, and the cooling fans run louder and wear out sooner. The solution is periodic cleaning: at least once a year for any device with fans, more often in dusty environments.

Mistake four: cheap power supplies

The charger and power supply that came with your device is usually well-matched to it. Replacements should be from reputable brands. The market is full of cheap chargers that deliver dirty power (unstable voltage, noisy current) that stresses the charging circuit and the battery.

The savings from a five-pound charger over a twenty-pound branded one are not worth the device damage. A phone fried by a faulty cheap charger costs hundreds of pounds to replace. A laptop that lost its battery to a poor power supply is similarly expensive.

Stick with the original charger or with reputable brands (Apple, Anker, Belkin, Samsung, Google, AmazonBasics is fine for basic cables).

Mistake five: ignoring small symptoms

Devices rarely fail without warning. They give signals first: a fan that runs louder than usual, a battery that drains noticeably faster, a charging port that needs the cable wiggled to make contact, an app that crashes unexpectedly. Each of these is the device telling you something is changing.

Address the small symptoms when they first appear. The repair window for most issues is days to weeks; ignored, the problem develops into a full failure that costs more to address.

Mistake six: using devices in dangerous environments

Phones used on construction sites without ruggedised cases. Laptops used in dusty workshops without covers. Tablets used in kitchens where they get splashed. Earbuds worn while swimming when they are not rated for it.

Match the device to the environment, or accept that you are accelerating failure. Many devices have ruggedised or sport variants designed for harsh environments; these cost slightly more upfront and last much longer in the conditions they are designed for.

Mistake seven: skipping software updates

OS and app updates often include performance optimisations, security patches, and bug fixes that genuinely improve device behaviour over time. Some users avoid updates because they have heard horror stories about updates breaking things; these stories are usually exaggerated.

Run software updates within a few weeks of release. Read release notes for any specific concerns. Maintain backups so you can recover if an update genuinely causes a problem.

Devices that go years without updates accumulate security vulnerabilities, performance issues, and incompatibilities with newer apps and services. They feel slow and unreliable not because the hardware is failing but because the software has been left behind.

Mistake eight: storing devices badly

Devices set aside for months should not be left fully charged or fully discharged. The right storage charge for lithium-ion batteries is around 50%. Storage in a hot or humid environment accelerates damage to all components, not just batteries.

For backup phones, old laptops, retired consoles: top up to about 50%, power down, store in a cool dry place. Check on them every six months and top up to 50% again if needed.

Mistake nine: assuming devices are fragile or invincible

Both attitudes cause damage in different ways. People who treat devices as fragile sometimes use them less and sometimes pay for unnecessary cases and screen protectors that add bulk without much benefit. People who treat devices as invincible drop them, leave them in extreme conditions, and ignore the small symptoms above.

The right attitude is informed care: know what damages the device, avoid the known issues, use the device confidently within those boundaries. Modern smartphones can survive normal use without a case. They cannot survive being left in a hot car or being dropped onto concrete from waist height.

The pattern across categories

The same general rules apply to almost every electronic device: avoid heat, avoid deep discharges, address small issues early, keep airflow clear, use quality power, update software regularly, store sensibly when not in use.

None of this requires deep technical knowledge. It just requires basic awareness of how electronic devices work and how they fail. Once you internalise these rules, your devices will routinely outlast their peers, and you will save substantial money over a decade of device ownership.
