Your coffee tastes a little off, your brewer takes longer than it used to, and the cause is almost certainly limescale you have never seen.

The Honest Truth About Cleaning Your Coffee Maker

The first sign that your coffee maker needs descaling is almost never an obvious one. It is usually a slow drift, over months, in the taste of the coffee. The flavour becomes flatter. The brew time gets gradually longer. The little gurgling sounds it makes change pitch. By the time you notice, the inside of the machine is coated in a layer of calcium carbonate that the manual told you to clean off three months ago.

Most of us, including me until I started paying proper attention, ignore the descaling step entirely. The light on the machine that says “descale” is, as far as the average user is concerned, more of a suggestion than an instruction. The result is a coffee maker that lasts maybe four years instead of ten, and produces increasingly mediocre coffee throughout its shortened life.

What is actually inside your machine

Coffee makers heat water. Heating water concentrates the minerals dissolved in it, particularly calcium and magnesium. Over time, those minerals deposit on the inside of the heating element and along the pipework as a hard white scale.

The scale does three bad things at once. It insulates the heating element so it has to work harder to produce the same temperature. It narrows the pipes so water flows more slowly. And it changes the temperature curve of the brewing process, which directly affects extraction. Coffee brewed at 88 degrees tastes flat compared to coffee brewed at 94 degrees, even if both look identical.

The descaling solution that costs almost nothing

You do not need a branded descaling product. White vinegar and citric acid both do the same job for a fraction of the cost. I use citric acid powder because it leaves no smell and rinses out faster. A small bag from a hardware shop costs less than three pounds and will descale a machine ten or fifteen times.

The basic recipe: dissolve two tablespoons of citric acid powder in a litre of warm water. Pour it into the water reservoir. Run the machine through a full brewing cycle into the empty carafe, but without coffee or filter paper. When the cycle finishes, leave the machine off for an hour. The acid sits in the pipes and dissolves scale slowly. Then run two or three full cycles of plain cold water through to rinse out any remaining acid.

For very heavily scaled machines, you may need to repeat the descaling cycle. If the first run came out with white particles in the carafe, that is dislodged scale. Good. The second run should come out clean.

How often is actually necessary

It depends entirely on your water. If you live in a soft water area, once every six months is plenty. If you live in a hard water area like much of southern England, every two to three months is more realistic. The descaling light on machines that have one is often a fair guide, but it tends to come on later than ideal.

An easy at-home test: look inside the water reservoir. If you see white deposits on the walls or in the corners, the inside of the machine has the same deposits, only worse, and it is time to descale.

The parts almost nobody cleans

Beyond descaling, three parts of a typical drip coffee maker collect residue that affects taste and performance.

  • The shower head, the perforated disc at the top of the brewing area where water comes out. Coffee oils accumulate here. Unscrew and wash with hot soapy water every couple of weeks.
  • The carafe lid, particularly inside the spout. Old coffee oils turn rancid here and contaminate fresh coffee.
  • The water reservoir, which can develop a slimy film that nobody wants to think about. Wipe out with a clean cloth at least weekly.

If your machine has a thermal carafe rather than a glass one, run hot water with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda through it occasionally to clear coffee oils.

The grinder, if you have one

If you grind your own beans, the grinder needs cleaning too. Coffee oils oxidise in burr grinders and turn rancid, which then contaminates fresh grounds. Most burr grinders can be partially disassembled for cleaning. Use a soft brush, never water. There are also small cleaning tablets made of rice flour and other absorbent material that you grind through the machine; they pick up residual oils. Once a month is enough for most home grinders.

Espresso machines have their own rituals

If you run an espresso machine with a portafilter, the rules are stricter. The group head needs back-flushing with a blind filter and a small amount of espresso machine cleaning powder every week if you use it daily. The portafilter and basket benefit from a soak in the same cleaning powder once a month. The steam wand should be wiped immediately after every use and the tip should be removed and cleaned once a week to clear milk residue.

None of this is glamorous, but the difference in espresso quality between a clean machine and a neglected one is shocking the first time you taste it.

Why coffee makers die younger than they should

The two most common reasons a coffee maker stops working: a thermal fuse triggered by scale-induced overheating, and a clogged pump that can no longer push water through narrowed pipes. Both are direct consequences of skipped descaling. Both are preventable.

Most coffee makers should comfortably last seven to ten years. Many do not, and almost all of those failures are caused by limescale and grease that an hour of attention every couple of months would have prevented. The same principle applies to many of our appliances; we tend to focus our care on the visible bits and ignore the bits that are doing the actual work.

A note about coffee freshness

Even a perfectly clean machine cannot save stale coffee. Pre-ground coffee from a sealed bag loses most of its aroma compounds within ten days of opening; whole beans last around three weeks. If you are doing all the right maintenance and your coffee still tastes flat, the beans are the more likely culprit. Buy smaller bags more often. Store them in an opaque, sealed container at room temperature, not in the fridge or freezer, where condensation cycles damage them. The combination of a clean machine and reasonably fresh coffee is what produces the cup you remember from a good cafe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Over time, repeated heavy vinegar use can dry out rubber seals and gaskets in some machines. Once every six months will not cause noticeable damage, but if you live in a hard water area and need to descale every two months, alternate vinegar with citric acid powder, which is gentler. After any acid descale, always run three or four cycles of plain water through the machine to rinse the acid out completely. Residual acid is what actually damages seals over time, not the cleaning itself.

Dislodged limescale. It looks alarming the first time but it is harmless and just confirms the descaling worked. Run two more cycles of plain water through the machine until the carafe comes out clear. If it persists for several cycles, you may have a heavily scaled machine that needs a second descaling round. White particles continuing to appear in regular coffee after rinsing means you have not rinsed enough; keep running clean water through until they stop.

Yes, and many people in very hard water areas do exactly this. The cost difference adds up, but so does the price of replacing a coffee maker. A reasonable compromise is to use a simple jug filter for your coffee water. A Brita-style filter removes most of the calcium and magnesium that causes scale. Replace the filter cartridge as recommended; an exhausted cartridge stops filtering and is worse than no filter at all.

The descaling rules are the same, every two to three months in hard water, every six in soft. Pod machines also need their piercing needles cleaned regularly because coffee residue builds up on them. Most have a maintenance cycle in the menu that handles both. Run it monthly. Wipe the pod insertion area down with a damp cloth after spills. Empty the used pod tray frequently; a damp tray is a breeding ground for mould.

Two common causes. The first is over-extraction, often because the brew temperature has climbed too high due to a scaled element working harder than necessary. Descale and the temperature should normalise. The second is rancid coffee oils on the brewing assembly, particularly the shower head. Old oils turn bitter and acrid; even fresh coffee tastes burnt when brewed through them. Disassemble what you can and clean with hot soapy water and a soft brush. If neither helps, the heating element may be failing and running too hot.
