Why Your Dishwasher Stopped Cleaning, Diagnosed Step by Step
Dishwashers rarely break. They almost always stop cleaning for one of seven boring, fixable reasons.
There is a particular kind of disappointment that comes from opening the dishwasher in the morning and finding the dishes you loaded the night before still gritty, still spotted, still essentially dirty. You ran the cycle. You used the right tablet. You stacked things the way you always have. And yet, here we are, washing everything again by hand.
The good news is that a dishwasher that has stopped cleaning is almost always still working perfectly. Something inside it is just being polite about telling you it is blocked. Over the past few years of helping friends and family troubleshoot theirs, I have ended up working through the same checklist seven or eight times. It almost always finds the answer within fifteen minutes.
Start with the filter (because almost everyone forgets)
The single most common cause of a dishwasher that has stopped cleaning is a filter packed with food debris. The filter sits at the bottom of the machine, usually under a removable bottom rack. On most models, you twist a central cylinder anti-clockwise to release it. Take the whole assembly out. It will likely be lined with a soft, smelly paste of old food and grease. Rinse it under hot tap water with a soft brush. If the mesh is properly stained, soak it for an hour in warm water with a squirt of washing-up liquid.
I check my parents’ dishwasher filter every couple of months. There is always something in it. A small piece of cabbage, a coffee bean, a fragment of eggshell, sometimes a price sticker from a piece of fruit. The point is not the individual debris; it is the cumulative effect. Once the filter is half blocked, the wash water cannot recirculate properly, and your dishes come out dirty.
Check the spray arms
The spray arms are the rotating plastic propellers that fling water at your dishes. Most dishwashers have two, one above and one below. Each is studded with small holes, and any one of those holes can be blocked by a tomato seed, a piece of pasta skin, or limescale from hard water.
Take each arm off. The bottom usually pulls straight up. The top often has a small plastic nut you unscrew. Hold each arm up to the light and look through the holes. Where you see darkness, work a toothpick or a thin piece of wire gently through to clear it. Run the arm under the tap until water sprays cleanly out of every hole. This step alone restores cleaning performance in a remarkable number of machines.
Look at the spinning, or the lack of it
Before you close everything back up, manually spin both spray arms with your finger. They should turn freely with very little resistance. If either one is stiff or sticks at certain points, there is calcium build-up on the bearing or a small piece of glass underneath that needs prising out. Stand a tall item like a thin baking tray near the back of the bottom rack and run the machine for a minute. Open it carefully. The top arm should have rotated past it. If it has not moved, the arm itself is being blocked, often by a piece of cutlery sticking too far through the basket.
The detergent question
Modern all-in-one tablets are designed to dissolve in water at 50 degrees and above. If you are running your dishwasher on the eco cycle at 38 degrees, the tablet may not be dissolving fully. You will sometimes find chunks of it stuck in the door dispenser at the end of a cycle. Try one of two things. Either move to the normal wash cycle at 55 to 60 degrees, or switch to a powder or gel detergent that dissolves more easily at low temperatures.
It is also worth checking the rinse aid reservoir. If it is empty, dishes will come out wet and streaked, which can look like a cleaning problem even when the wash itself was fine. Refill it. The cap on most models clicks shut firmly.
Water temperature and pressure
Dishwashers connect to your hot water supply on some installations and to cold on others. If yours runs from hot, make sure your water heater is set to at least 55 degrees and that nobody else in the house is running a hot tap during the cycle. If yours connects to cold, the dishwasher heats the water internally; check that the heating element is not clouded with limescale.
Limescale is the silent killer of dishwashers in hard water areas. The heating element gets coated, the water stops getting properly hot, and the cleaning fails quietly. Run a maintenance cycle with citric acid every couple of months. A teaspoon of citric acid powder in the empty dishwasher on a hot cycle clears limescale without any of the smell of vinegar.
The seven things to check, in order
- The filter at the bottom of the machine.
- The spray arm holes, on both arms.
- Whether the spray arms can rotate freely.
- Whether items in the racks are blocking the spray arms.
- The dispenser door for stuck tablet residue.
- The rinse aid level.
- The temperature of the wash cycle you have chosen.
When the problem is something deeper
If you have worked through that list and the dishes are still coming out dirty, the issue is likely the circulation pump or the heating element. Both are repairable but generally require a technician. A pump may cost between forty and ninety pounds for the part, plus an hour or two of labour. That is still significantly cheaper than a new dishwasher, particularly if yours is mid-range and under twelve years old.
If you also notice that the machine is draining slowly, the drain pump may be partially blocked. That is sometimes a DIY job if you are comfortable tipping the machine carefully forward to access the underside. If you are not, do not feel any pressure to try.
Once you get into the rhythm of checking the filter every couple of months and running a citric acid cycle twice a year, dishwashers tend to behave themselves for a long time. Ours is fifteen and still scrubs with no complaint. The trick is not buying a better machine. It is paying a small amount of attention to the simple, mechanical things inside the one you already have.

The second is hard water; the cloudiness is a thin film of calcium carbonate baked onto the glass. Run a citric acid cycle to clear the machine of limescale and switch to a tablet or detergent with a built-in water softener. If the cloudiness scratches off with your fingernail, it is limescale. If it does not, the glass has been etched and there is no fix.
For a household that cooks most nights, every six to eight weeks. For a single person or someone who uses the dishwasher only a few times a week, every three months is fine. The honest test is to take the filter out and look. If the mesh has any visible film or food fragments stuck in it, it is time. The job takes five minutes and noticeably improves cleaning performance.
No, and most manufacturers actively discourage it. Modern dishwasher tablets contain enzymes that need a small amount of food residue to work properly. Pre-rinsing every plate to spotless cleanliness leaves the enzymes with nothing to attach to, and you can actually end up with worse cleaning. Scrape large bits of food into the bin, then load. Save your water bill and your back.
Almost certainly limescale from hard water. If you live in a hard water area, this is the single biggest enemy of your dishwasher. Use a tablet that includes a water softener function, top up your rinse aid, and run a citric acid maintenance cycle every two months. Some dishwashers have a built-in water softener that needs salt; check your model and refill the salt reservoir if so. The film should fade within a few cycles.

The element itself usually costs between twenty and fifty pounds, and replacing it requires tipping the machine carefully forward and undoing a few screws and a wire connector. If you have never done this before, please watch two or three videos of the specific job on your specific model before you start.
