The Three Appliance Mistakes That Quietly Shorten Lifespan
You did not break it. You just did the same thing every day for a decade that nobody warned you about.
The appliances in our kitchens and laundry rooms are far better made than we give them credit for. A modern washing machine should last fifteen years. A fridge twenty. A dishwasher twelve. An oven, thirty if you are lucky. But the actual average lifespan is significantly lower, and almost never because of bad luck or poor manufacturing.
Talking to engineers who repair appliances for a living, the same three mistakes come up again and again. None of them feel like mistakes when you are making them. All of them quietly take years off the life of the things in your house.
Mistake one: overloading, in every direction
This is the single most common one. We push our appliances harder than they are designed to be pushed, every day, without realising it.
A washing machine has a maximum dry-weight capacity for a reason. Stuffing it full means the drum cannot tumble freely, the bearings work harder, the motor draws more current, and the spin becomes unbalanced. Every overloaded cycle takes a tiny amount of life off the bearings and the suspension. Over a decade, those tiny amounts add up to early failure.
A dishwasher overloaded the same way cannot circulate water properly. Dishes come out dirty, the user runs longer cycles or higher temperatures to compensate, the heating element and pump work harder, and the entire machine wears faster.
A fridge stuffed beyond capacity cannot circulate cold air. Items at the back freeze; items at the front spoil. The compressor runs almost constantly trying to maintain temperature. Compressors are not infinite. They have a finite number of run hours in them. Every hour they run unnecessarily is an hour subtracted from their life.
The fix is unfashionable but simple. Use the smaller cycle if you only have a small load. Pause and split the load if you are about to cram things in. Leave breathing room in the fridge. Resist the urge to push appliances to maximum capacity every single time.
Mistake two: ignoring the small noises
Appliances rarely fail without warning. They almost always tell you something is changing, weeks or months before the failure happens. A small new rattle. A grinding that comes and goes. A faint smell during a cycle. A button that takes two presses instead of one.
We have been trained, by our digital lives, to ignore minor things until they become major. A phone with a sluggish app is normal. A laptop with a noisy fan is normal. But a washing machine is not a laptop. A small new noise from an appliance is almost always the first warning of a part that is starting to fail, and almost always cheap to address if you address it within the first month or two.
The cost difference between fixing something at the first sign of trouble versus waiting until it fails completely is often a factor of ten. A worn bearing replaced when it starts to whine costs forty pounds. The same bearing left to fail until the drum seizes can write off the entire machine.
Start paying attention to the sounds of your appliances. You do not need to be expert. You only need to notice when something has changed.
Mistake three: skipping the maintenance the manual mentioned once
Every appliance manual contains a maintenance section. Almost nobody reads it. Even if they do, almost nobody acts on it.
Coffee makers need descaling. Washers need a hot empty cycle. Dishwashers need filter cleaning. Fridges need their coils cleared. Ovens need their door seals checked. Dryers need their vents brushed. None of these are difficult. All of them take less than an hour. All of them, done annually, double the realistic life of the appliance.
The pattern I see in homes where appliances last twenty years is almost never about buying premium models. It is almost always about a household that has, somehow, built a routine of small attention. A weekend in February when things get checked. A note in the calendar in October. A folder of receipts in the kitchen drawer.
The pattern in homes where appliances die at seven years is the opposite. Nothing is ever maintained. Nothing is ever cleaned beyond the visible surfaces. The first warning sign is the catastrophic failure.
What a sensible routine actually looks like
You do not need to become an appliance hobbyist. You need a roughly twice-a-year rhythm. Twenty minutes per appliance, twice a year, is plenty for most homes.
- Washer: clean the door seal, run a hot empty vinegar cycle, clean the drain filter, check the feet are level.
- Dryer: clean the lint filter properly with water, brush the vent thoroughly, check the exterior vent flap.
- Fridge: pull out, vacuum the coils, check the door seal, clear the drain hole, test temperatures.
- Dishwasher: clean the filter, clear the spray arm holes, run a citric acid cycle, top up the rinse aid.
- Oven: clean the interior, check the door seal, test temperature accuracy with a thermometer.
- Microwave: clean the interior thoroughly, vacuum the vents, check the turntable coupling.
- Coffee maker: descale with citric acid, clean the shower head, wipe the reservoir.
That is the whole list. Two days a year. Either side of the clock change works well as a memorable trigger. We do ours in March and October. Our fridge is fifteen years old, our washer is twelve, our oven is eighteen, and none of them shows any sign of giving up.
The harder truth about modern appliances
Some categories of appliance have been quietly redesigned to be harder to repair. Sealed drums on cheap washers. Glued-in components on some dishwashers. Proprietary control boards that go out of production a few years after the model. There is genuine consumer-rights frustration here, and the right-to-repair movement is steadily pushing back.
That said, even in the worst categories, the lifespan you get out of an appliance is overwhelmingly determined by how it is used and maintained, not by what brand is on the front. The three mistakes above account for more early failures than every manufacturing fault combined.

Budget appliances run closer to their limits in normal use, which means missed maintenance has a bigger proportional impact. The cost of a vinegar cycle, a filter cleaning, and a coil vacuum is the same whether your washer cost two hundred pounds or two thousand. The relative benefit is larger on the cheaper machine.
Most appliances have a serial number sticker, often inside the door, behind the kick panel, or on the back. The serial number usually encodes the manufacturing month and year, though the format varies by brand. A search for "(brand) serial number date" usually turns up the decoding. If you cannot find the serial number, the design and the type of controls give a rough decade. Knowing roughly how old an appliance is helps you make sensible decisions about whether a given repair is worth it.
A healthy fridge cycles. The compressor runs for ten to twenty minutes, then rests for a similar period. What you do not want is a compressor that runs continuously without resting, or one that never seems to come on at all. Listen over a few days and get a rough sense of the rhythm. Any abrupt change in that rhythm (much longer run times, very short run times, very long rests) is worth investigating.
In most cases, no. Extended warranties are a profit centre for the retailer, not a good deal for the consumer. The exceptions are higher-end appliances with proprietary parts where a single repair can run into hundreds of pounds, and households where the appliance is used much more heavily than average (large families, restaurant kitchens, etc). For a typical home buying a typical appliance, the money is better saved against an eventual repair or replacement.
Across categories, the single most common cause is heat-related stress: a compressor running too long because of dirty coils, a heating element working too hard because of limescale, a motor running too long because of overloading. Heat ages components quickly. Anything you can do to reduce the heat stress on an appliance (clean coils, clear vents, descale, do not overload) prolongs life across the board. The second most common is moisture-related: rust in cavities that should be dry, mould in seals, water that has pooled where it should not.
