The Refrigerator Door Seal: A Small Repair That Saves a Big Bill
A worn fridge gasket is the appliance equivalent of leaving a window open all winter. The fix takes an hour and pays for itself in months.
The rubber gasket around your fridge door is, dollar for dollar, the highest-impact part on the entire appliance. It is also the part nobody thinks about until it is too late. The five-second test that tells you everything
Open your fridge. Hold a piece of plain paper against the door frame. Close the door on it. Try to pull the paper out. You should feel firm, even resistance all the way around the door.
Repeat the test at a dozen positions around the perimeter: top, bottom, both sides, all four corners. If the paper slides out easily at any single position, the gasket is failing at that spot.
A second test, slightly more theatrical: put a torch inside the fridge pointing at the door from the inside, close the door, and turn off the lights in the kitchen. If you can see any light leaking around the edge, the gasket has failed.
Before you replace, try cleaning
A surprising amount of “failed” gaskets are actually just clogged with the slow accumulation of fridge debris. Sticky fruit juice that ran down the inside of the door, butter that escaped a wrapper, baby food that spilled and was wiped at without disassembling the door. All of these can compromise the seal even when the rubber itself is perfectly fine.
Take a warm soapy cloth and clean every fold of the rubber gasket, from end to end. Pull the gasket gently away from the door and clean behind it as well; food residue often lurks where the gasket meets the door frame. Once the gasket is clean, redo the paper test.
For really stubborn residue, white vinegar diluted half-and-half with water dissolves most fridge gunk in a few minutes. Finish with a clear water wipe.
When the gasket itself has lost its spring
Rubber ages. After ten to fifteen years, even a clean gasket may have lost the elasticity that allowed it to sit flush against the door frame. You will know this when the paper test still fails after a thorough clean, or when you can see the rubber has stiffened, cracked, or developed visible compression marks.
Soft compression marks (where the gasket has flattened in spots) can sometimes be revived. Use a hair dryer on medium heat for thirty seconds over each compressed area; the warmth makes the rubber temporarily pliable. Then close the door and leave it for an hour. This works for mild compression but not for serious age.
Sourcing a replacement gasket
You need the exact part for your specific model. Look on the side of the fridge for a metal plate or sticker listing the model number; it is usually in the fridge cavity along the wall. Search online for “(your model number) door gasket” or check the manufacturer’s spare parts website.
A new gasket for a typical domestic fridge costs between thirty and ninety pounds depending on the model. Some manufacturers ship them folded for posting; if so, unfold the gasket and lay it flat in a warm room for 24 hours before installing. Folded creases can take a few days to fully relax out.

- Clean everything.
- Slide the new gasket into place behind the strip, working your way around. Tighten the screws gradually and evenly; do not fully tighten one screw before moving to the next, or you will create tension.
- Re-do the paper test.
The first week after installation
A new gasket may take a few days to fully settle into its final shape. It may feel slightly stiffer initially, and you may notice you have to push the door a little harder to close it. This is normal. Within a week, the gasket will relax into a perfect seal.
If after a week the door is still hard to close, you may have stretched the gasket slightly during installation. Some gentle pulling at the over-stretched section, working with the gasket warm from a hair dryer, can usually restore even tension.
