The Dryer Vent Mistake That’s Costing You Money Every Month
A clogged dryer vent runs your electricity bill up, slows your cycles, and sets fires. Most people clean theirs once, and never again.
I will start with the only statistic I keep coming back to. A dryer with a partially clogged vent uses up to thirty per cent more electricity to dry the same load of clothes. A fully clogged vent uses far more, runs much hotter, and is responsible for around four thousand house fires a year in the UK alone. Most of those fires are entirely preventable, with about an hour of work, once a year.
Almost nobody does it. People clean the lint filter inside the door every cycle, which is good, but they assume that is the entire job. It is not. Lint passes through and beyond the filter and collects, over months and years, in the vent that runs from the back of the dryer to the outside of the house. That collected lint is what slows your drying, raises your bill, and on a bad day catches fire.
How to tell if your vent is clogged
You almost never see the lint. You see the symptoms. Watch for any of these.
- A cycle that used to take an hour now takes ninety minutes for the same load.
- Clothes that come out hotter than usual, sometimes uncomfortably hot to handle.
- The dryer itself feeling hot to the touch on the outside.
- A faint burning smell during cycles.
- The room where the dryer sits feeling unusually humid.
- Lint visible around the dryer door, the back, or on the floor.
Any one of those symptoms means your vent needs attention. Two or more means it needs attention this weekend.
The full clean, step by step
You will need a vent brush kit, which is a flexible brush head on extendable rods designed for exactly this job. They cost between twelve and twenty-five pounds and last forever. You will also need a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment, a screwdriver, and an old sheet to catch debris.
Unplug the dryer. Pull it forward enough to reach the back. There is a duct, usually a few inches in diameter, that runs from the back of the dryer to a hole in the wall or an external vent. Disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer; on most models it is held with a hose clamp or a metal band you loosen with a screwdriver.
Vacuum out everything you can see. The opening at the back of the dryer itself almost always has a thick mat of lint just inside it. Reach in carefully with the vacuum nozzle.
Now feed your vent brush into the duct from inside the house and push it all the way to the exterior vent, twisting as you go. If your run is long or has bends, this takes patience. Pull the brush back, vacuum what comes out, repeat from the outside vent inwards. You will be astonished by how much lint comes out the first time you do this. It will likely fill a small carrier bag.
While you are outside, check that the exterior vent flap actually opens and closes freely. Lint, leaves, and occasional bird nests can stop the flap from opening fully, which traps moisture and lint inside the duct.
Why the type of vent duct matters
If your dryer is connected with a flexible plastic or foil concertina duct, that is almost certainly part of the problem. Those flexible ducts have ridges inside that catch lint, and the plastic ones can sag, kink, or melt. Modern advice is to replace them with semi-rigid aluminium ducting, which has a smooth interior, holds its shape, and does not present a fire risk.
This is a job almost anyone can do in an afternoon. Buy a length of semi-rigid duct, two hose clamps, and a roll of aluminium tape (never ordinary duct tape, which fails at high temperatures). Remove the old duct, fit the new one as straight as possible, secure the clamps at both ends, tape the joins. Keep the duct as short as possible and avoid sharp bends.
The lint filter is doing less than you think
Even with diligent filter cleaning, around fifteen per cent of lint passes through. Over a year of regular use, that adds up to enough to choke a vent. Cleaning the filter is necessary but not sufficient.
Once a month, take the filter out completely and wash it with warm water and a soft brush. Modern fabric softener sheets leave a thin coating on the mesh that you cannot see but that genuinely restricts airflow. Hold the wet filter up to the light; if water beads on it instead of flowing through, it needs washing.
When to call someone
If your vent has a long or complex run, particularly if it goes up through the loft or across the underside of a floor, the cleaning is harder to do thoroughly yourself. There are companies that specialise in dryer vent cleaning; they charge between sixty and a hundred and twenty pounds and do a proper job in under an hour. Once every three years from a professional, with your own annual brushing in between, will keep things safe.
If you can smell burning during a cycle, switch the dryer off, unplug it, and do not run it again until you have either cleaned the vent thoroughly or had it inspected. Burning is the warning sign that matters.
What changes when the vent is clean
Clothes dry faster. The dryer runs cooler. The room feels less humid. Your electricity bill drops noticeably. The dryer itself lasts years longer because the heating element and the motor are not constantly working against resistance. None of these things are visible, but they are all real.
I have started doing ours every February. It is a small ritual, takes about an hour with tea, and it makes a real difference to how much we spend over the year. Once a year as a minimum, twice a year if you use the dryer most days, have pets, or wash a lot of fluffy items like towels and bedding. The lint filter inside the door should still be cleaned every load; that is separate. The vent itself is the run of ducting from the back of the dryer to the outside. Calendar it for the same day each year if it helps. We do ours every February when we change the smoke alarm batteries.
You can, and many people do, but you need to be careful. A leaf blower can push the lint outwards in one direction and pack it more tightly in the other. The best approach is to brush the vent first with a proper vent brush, then use the leaf blower from inside to push any remaining loose lint out through the exterior vent. Make sure the exterior flap is open and that you are not blowing lint into a confined space.
Most professional installers and fire safety advice say no. Secondary lint traps inside the vent line can themselves become a fire hazard if not cleaned constantly, and they restrict airflow even when clean. The lint filter at the door, combined with annual vent cleaning, is the recommended setup. The exception is some indoor venting kits used in flats with no exterior vent option, which use a water container; those are different products with their own rules.
It becomes more important. A dryer in a closet has less ambient airflow, so any vent restriction shows up faster as humidity, slow drying, and overheating. Make sure the closet door has ventilation slats or remains slightly ajar during cycles. Use rigid aluminium ducting, kept as short as possible, with as few bends as you can manage. Clean the vent twice a year. Do not run a closeted dryer overnight while you are asleep.
Any sign of melting, sagging, kinking, or cracking. Any plastic flexible ducting at all; that should be replaced regardless of condition. Any visible holes or tears. Any duct that has been crushed flat at any point along its run. Replacement with rigid or semi-rigid aluminium is straightforward and costs less than thirty pounds in materials for most runs. It is one of the highest-value safety upgrades you can make in a home.
