The day our ice maker stopped producing ice, my first instinct was to assume it had failed permanently. Our fridge is about seven years old, the ice maker has worked steadily that whole time, and a sudden complete stop seemed like the kind of thing that requires a service call.

It did not. After about forty minutes of methodical poking around, I found the problem was a kinked water line behind the fridge, caused by pushing the fridge slightly closer to the wall the previous weekend during a clean. Twenty seconds of straightening the hose and twelve hours of patience later, the ice was back.

Ice makers are simpler than they look. They have only a small number of failure modes, and most of them are not actually failures so much as small interruptions in a chain. Here is the order to check things in.

1. Make sure the ice maker is actually switched on

Almost every freezer with a built-in ice maker has a wire bail arm or a small switch that turns the unit on and off. The wire arm is the most common; it is a thin metal hoop that hangs down inside the ice bucket. When ice fills the bucket and pushes the arm up, the ice maker stops producing. When ice is removed and the arm drops, it starts again.

If your arm is stuck in the up position (perhaps a clump of ice has fused in front of it), the ice maker thinks the bucket is full and stops producing. Reach in, free the arm, and confirm it swings freely.

If your ice maker uses an optical sensor or a button switch instead, check the manual for the on/off switch location. It is often inadvertently switched off during cleaning.

2. Check the water supply line

Your ice maker needs water. The water comes from a small line, usually a quarter-inch plastic or copper tube, that runs from a nearby cold water supply to the back of the fridge. There is almost always a shut-off valve at the supply end, often behind the fridge or under the sink.

Two things to check. First, has the valve been turned off, even slightly? It happens more often than you would expect; someone working on a different plumbing job might have closed it. Second, is the line kinked anywhere? Pull the fridge out (carefully) and look at the path the line takes. A kink at the back of the fridge is the most common cause of “the ice maker just stopped one day.”

If the line uses a saddle valve (a small clamp-on valve onto an existing pipe), be aware that saddle valves clog easily over time and are a common cause of slow or no water flow. Replacing a saddle valve with a proper tee fitting is a small but worthwhile upgrade.

3. Inspect the water filter

Many fridges with ice makers also have an in-line water filter, either on the line behind the fridge or built into the front grille of the fridge itself. Filters need replacing roughly every six months in most households. A heavily clogged filter chokes the water supply to the ice maker.

If you cannot remember when you last changed the filter, change it. The filter is the cheapest and easiest part to replace, and a fresh filter often solves slow-ice or no-ice problems immediately. Filters cost between fifteen and forty pounds depending on the model.

4. Check the temperature of the freezer

Ice makers need a freezer at minus 15 degrees or colder to work properly. If your freezer is running warm (say, minus 10) the ice maker may struggle to freeze water in its tray, or may freeze it too slowly to keep up with demand.

Put a thermometer in the freezer for 24 hours and confirm the temperature. If it is too warm, the freezer itself needs investigation: dirty condenser coils, a failing door seal, or a stuffed freezer that cannot circulate cold air are common causes.

5. Look for an ice jam in the chute

If your ice maker has a dispenser in the door, the most common silent fault is a jam in the dispenser chute. Small bits of ice cluster together and freeze into a single block that the auger cannot move. The ice maker keeps trying, the chute stays blocked, and eventually the unit gives up.

Open the freezer and remove the ice bucket. Empty it completely. If the bucket is partially fused, take it to the sink and run warm water over it until the ice releases. Check the chute itself for any visible blockage. Replace the bucket, close the freezer, and wait twelve hours for the unit to produce new ice.

6. Reset the ice maker

Many ice makers have a reset button or procedure. On some models, a small button on the front of the ice maker is pressed and held for three seconds. On others, the on/off switch is cycled twice within a few seconds. A small number need the wire bail arm lifted, lowered, and lifted again in a specific pattern.

Check your manual or search for your fridge model number plus “ice maker reset.” Manufacturers include the procedure because ice maker control boards can get into a confused state and a reset clears it.

7. The water inlet valve

The water inlet valve is the electrically controlled valve that lets water into the ice maker when the controller asks for it. If the valve has failed (electrically or mechanically), no water reaches the ice maker even if everything else is working perfectly.

Testing the inlet valve requires either a multimeter or the willingness to swap in a new one and see if the problem resolves. The valve is usually accessible from the back of the fridge with the lower rear panel removed; it is a small plastic box with one or two water connections and an electrical plug. Replacement valves cost between twenty and fifty pounds.

If you are not comfortable with multimeter testing or basic appliance plumbing, this is the point at which calling a professional starts to make sense.

8. When the ice maker itself has failed

If you have worked through everything above and the unit still does not produce ice, the ice maker module itself may have failed. Most modules are replaceable as a single unit, with one electrical connector and two or three mounting screws. They cost between forty and a hundred and twenty pounds depending on the brand.

For a fridge under ten years old, this is a worthwhile repair. For a fridge older than that, you may want to weigh the cost of the ice maker module against the broader question of whether the fridge as a whole has much life left.

After a reset or after a freezer has been emptied to thaw, expect to wait at least 12 hours before you see meaningful ice production, and 24 hours before the bucket is full. Patience here matters; people often assume the reset failed and tinker further when they just needed to wait.

Almost always either an old water filter or absorbed odours from food in the freezer. Replace the filter first. If the taste persists, empty the ice bucket completely, wash it, and let the ice maker produce a fresh batch with the freezer well-stocked but with strong-smelling foods sealed in containers. Ice readily absorbs odours from anything stored uncovered.

No, but you should switch the ice maker off if you are not using it. Leaving an unused ice maker switched on means water cycles through, ice gets produced and then never used, and the freezer fills with ice you do not want. Many ice makers have a wire bail arm you simply lift to the "off" position. The water supply can also be shut off at the valve.

Insufficient water reaching the mould. Causes include a partially clogged water filter, a partially closed supply valve, low household water pressure, or a partial blockage in the inlet valve. Change the filter and check the supply line first. If the cubes remain small after fresh water flow, the inlet valve may be sticking.

Sometimes yes, if the fridge was originally available with an optional ice maker and the freezer has the necessary mounting points and electrical connections. Retrofitting an ice maker into a fridge that was never designed for one is usually not practical.
