A Practical Guide to Fixing Veneer Lifting and Bubbling
Lifted veneer looks like a disaster and is usually a fifteen-minute fix with a household iron.
Veneer is wood that has been sliced into very thin sheets and bonded to a thicker, often cheaper, substrate underneath. It allows a piece of furniture to look like it is made of expensive wood without actually being made of expensive wood. Most mid-range furniture from the past century uses veneer for its visible surfaces.
When veneer lifts, bubbles, or peels, the result looks alarming. The good news is that almost all veneer damage is repairable, often in fifteen minutes, with tools and materials you already have at home. The better news is that learning to repair veneer well opens up a whole category of furniture to amateur restoration.
What is happening when veneer lifts
Veneer is held to its substrate with adhesive. Over decades, that adhesive can fail in spots, either because of moisture penetrating from one side, heat causing it to release, or simply age. When the adhesive releases, the thin veneer is no longer bonded to the substrate and can bubble (when there is still some attachment around the edges) or lift entirely.
The traditional adhesive in older furniture was hide glue, which is uniquely repairable: hide glue softens with heat, allowing veneer to be re-bonded by simply reactivating the existing adhesive with an iron. Modern furniture uses contact adhesives or PVA, which require fresh adhesive for repair but are still workable.
The iron trick for hide-glue veneer
For older furniture (anything pre-1980 or so, and many newer pieces made with traditional methods), the iron trick is genuinely magical. It works on bubbles, lifted edges, and small peels.
- Cover the affected area with a clean cotton cloth (a tea towel is ideal).
- Set your iron to medium heat with steam off.
- Press the iron firmly onto the cloth over the lifted area for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Lift the iron and the cloth. The veneer should now be reattached.
- Immediately press the area firmly with your hand or a heavy book for 5 minutes while the reactivated glue cools and re-sets.
The heat softens the old hide glue, allowing the veneer to bond back to the substrate. As the glue cools, it sets again. The repair is invisible and often as strong as the original.
If a small bubble persists, you may need to make a tiny slit with a sharp knife to let the trapped air out, then re-iron. Cut along the grain of the veneer so the slit is invisible.
For modern PVA-bonded veneer
For furniture made with modern adhesives, the iron trick alone usually does not work. You need to inject fresh adhesive.
- If the bubble is intact, make a small slit with a sharp craft knife along the grain.
- Use a syringe or a thin piece of card to slip a small amount of PVA wood glue underneath the veneer.
- Press the veneer down firmly. Wipe away any excess glue immediately.
- Cover with wax paper or plastic film (so the glue does not stick to your weight), then place a flat heavy object on top.
- Leave for at least 24 hours.
For larger lifted areas, you may need to lift the veneer fully to clean both surfaces, then re-bond.
For corner damage
Veneer at the corners of furniture is most vulnerable to chipping and lifting. The fix depends on whether the veneer is missing or just lifted.
For lifted-but-present corner veneer: clean the substrate underneath of any old dried adhesive, apply fresh PVA, press the veneer back into place, and clamp firmly. Use a small block of wood under the clamp to spread the pressure.
For missing corner veneer: this is harder. You need to source a matching veneer patch and graft it in. Iron-on veneer strips are sold in DIY shops and come in common wood types (oak, walnut, mahogany). Match the wood type to your furniture, cut a patch slightly oversized, apply per the iron-on instructions, then trim to fit precisely with a sharp knife.
The match will almost never be perfect for colour and grain, but a well-applied patch reads as character rather than damage on most pieces.
For badly damaged veneer that needs to be replaced
If a large section of veneer is missing, cracked, or has been damaged beyond patching, you may need to remove and replace the veneer for that whole panel. This is a real woodworking project, not a quick repair.
The job involves: removing the existing damaged veneer entirely (often with patient work using a heat gun and a putty knife), cleaning the substrate flat and smooth, sourcing matching veneer in a sheet large enough to cover the panel, applying contact adhesive or veneer-specific adhesive, laying the new veneer carefully, weighting it while it dries, and then trimming, sanding, and finishing.
For a beginner, this is genuinely a learning project. Practice on a piece you do not care about before attempting it on something you do.
Preventing future veneer problems
Veneer fails most often where moisture has gotten under it (a wet glass left for hours, a leaking flower pot, a basement humidity problem). Keep veneered surfaces away from direct moisture. Use coasters and trivets religiously. Wipe up spills immediately.
Heat also damages veneer adhesive. Avoid placing veneered furniture against radiators or in direct sunlight for long periods.
For veneered surfaces that get heavy use (a coffee table, a dining table), consider whether the piece would be better served by a glass top or a runner to protect the veneer. The protection is much cheaper than re-veneering.
When is it not worth fixing?
Veneer repair on inexpensive flat-pack furniture is rarely worth the effort. The substrate underneath modern veneered furniture is often particle board or MDF that does not take repair well, and the matching of replacement veneer to the original is difficult on factory-finished pieces.
For solid-wood furniture with traditional veneer, repair is almost always worthwhile. Even quite extensive veneer damage can be repaired or replaced and the piece can have decades of further life.

Look at the edges and the underside. Veneer is a thin (usually less than a millimetre thick) layer on top of a different substrate. You can often see the join where the veneer ends and the substrate begins, especially on undersides and back edges. The grain on the top often does not match the grain on the side of a veneered piece. Solid wood shows the same grain running through the thickness of the piece. Tap the surface; solid wood has a more resonant sound than veneered surfaces.
The adhesive may be modern PVA or contact adhesive rather than hide glue. The iron trick relies on the heat-reactivating property of hide glue, which most pre-1980 European furniture used. For modern adhesives, you need to inject fresh PVA glue underneath the veneer. Try the iron first; it is fast and reversible if it does not work. If after a few attempts the veneer will not stay down, switch to the injection approach.
Very carefully and very little. Veneer is typically less than a millimetre thick, sometimes much less. A few passes with sandpaper can wear through the veneer and expose the substrate underneath, ruining the finish permanently. For light finishing or removing surface marks, use the finest sandpaper you can find (400 grit or higher) and stop frequently to check progress. For aggressive sanding, veneered furniture is the wrong candidate.
In principle yes, but the process is constrained by the thinness of the veneer. You cannot sand back to bare wood without risking breaking through. You can strip the existing finish with chemical stripper, apply a new stain, and refinish, but the result depends on the original colour: going darker is much easier than going lighter. For dramatic colour changes, paint may be a more reliable approach than stain.
Usually yes, with patience. Large bubbles often respond to the iron trick or to careful injection of fresh adhesive working from a single slit. Address them as soon as you notice them; bubbles that have been there for years can dry out and crack, becoming much harder to fix. If the entire panel has lifted, you may need to remove the veneer fully and re-veneer; this is a bigger project but achievable for a confident amateur.
