A torn jacket is not a ruined jacket. Patches can be invisible, decorative, or anything in between.

How to Patch Your Favourite Jacket Properly

The waxed cotton jacket I have worn through three winters caught on a fence post a few months ago. The tear was about six centimetres long, in a clearly visible spot on the chest pocket. The jacket cost real money. It would have been painful to retire it.

The repair took an evening: a small piece of similar fabric from a hidden seam, a careful patch, an iron, some matching thread, and the jacket is back in service. The patch shows on close inspection but does not draw the eye from a normal distance. The jacket has another five or ten years in it.

Patching jackets is one of the more rewarding clothing repairs because jackets cost more than most other garments and last longer when properly maintained. The technique varies depending on the type of jacket fabric, but the principles transfer well.

Identifying what your jacket is made of

Different fabrics need different approaches:

Cotton (canvas, denim, drill): The most forgiving. Patches sew cleanly and can be either invisible or deliberately visible.

Wool (tweed, melton, blanket wool): Patches can be matched well using similar wool fabric. The fuzzy nature of wool tends to hide patches.

Waxed cotton (Barbour, Belstaff): Requires patches in similar waxed material. After patching, the area should be re-waxed to maintain water resistance.

Leather: Patches require specialist skills and tools. Generally best left to professionals.

Down or insulated jackets: Tears need immediate repair to prevent down loss. Specialised tape or fabric patches with adhesive backing work for emergency repair; full sewing requires care not to puncture the inner lining.

Technical synthetics (Gore-Tex, eVent): Patches with specialised adhesive tape designed for technical fabrics. Sewing creates holes that compromise waterproofness.

The visible-versus-invisible decision

The first decision: do you want the patch to be invisible (or as close as possible) or deliberately visible as a feature?

An invisible patch is sewn from the inside, with the patch behind the tear. Stitches travel through the patch and the jacket fabric in a way that minimises visibility from the outside. This is more difficult and rarely perfectly invisible, but can be remarkably discrete.

A visible patch is sewn on top of the tear, often in a contrasting fabric or thread. This is the easier technique and produces a deliberate feature; the jacket becomes a jacket-with-a-patch rather than a jacket-with-a-repair.

For workwear, casual jackets, and anything where character is welcome, visible patches work well. For dressier jackets where you want the original look preserved, invisible patches are worth the extra effort.

The invisible patch (cotton or wool)

  1. Source patch fabric from a hidden part of the same jacket if possible (inside a hem, behind a pocket lining). If not possible, find fabric of identical type, weight, and as close in colour as you can manage.
  2. Cut the patch about 2cm larger than the tear on all sides.
  3. Turn the jacket inside-out.
  4. Position the patch behind the tear, aligned with the grain of the jacket fabric.
  5. Pin in place from outside through both layers, around the perimeter of the patch.
  6. Sew with small, careful stitches from the outside, catching the patch underneath but barely visible on the outside. Use thread that matches the jacket exactly.
  7. For the actual tear itself, use a few diagonal stitches that pull the torn edges together over the patch underneath.
  8. Press flat with an iron from the inside.

The result, on most fabrics, is a repair that requires close inspection to notice. From across a room, the jacket looks untorn.

The visible patch (decorative)

  1. Choose patch fabric that complements the jacket (similar weight, similar formality, a colour that works deliberately).
  2. Cut the patch to a clean shape (rectangular, oval, or following the contour you want).
  3. Position the patch over the tear, on the outside.
  4. Pin in place. The patch should fully cover the tear with at least 1cm margin.
  5. Sew around the perimeter with a strong, neat running stitch or backstitch. Use contrasting thread if you want the stitching itself to show as part of the decoration.
  6. Optionally, add reinforcement stitching across the patch interior (parallel rows of stitching) for both decorative effect and strength.

The Japanese “sashiko” style uses a particular pattern of stitching (typically white thread on indigo cotton) that has become popular in Western mending. The result is genuinely beautiful and durable.

The waxed cotton jacket specifically

Waxed cotton jackets (Barbour and similar) have specific patching needs because of the wax. The fabric is stiff, the patches need to be in similar waxed material, and the finished repair needs to be re-waxed to maintain the water-resistant character.

  1. Source a small piece of waxed cotton fabric, either from the same brand’s repair kit, from an old waxed jacket, or as a small repair patch from the manufacturer.
  2. Position behind the tear (or on top for a visible patch).
  3. Use a heavy-duty needle and waxed thread (or regular thread that you have run through beeswax for waterproofing).
  4. Stitch with backstitches close together for strength.
  5. Once the repair is complete, treat the area with waxed cotton dressing (Barbour Thornproof, Fjällräven Greenland Wax, or similar). The wax restores water resistance and integrates the patch with the rest of the jacket.

A friend who collects vintage Barbours once told me that a jacket that has been carefully repaired and re-waxed is often more valuable than an unrepaired one; the repair becomes part of the jacket’s history and shows it has been loved.

The wax of the matter for technical jackets

For technical waterproof jackets (Gore-Tex and similar), sewing punctures the membrane and compromises waterproofness. The correct approach is repair tape designed for technical fabrics.

Tenacious Tape, McNett Outdoor Repair Adhesive, and similar products are sold for this purpose. They adhere with the right balance of strength and flexibility, and do not damage the waterproof membrane.

  1. Clean and dry the area around the tear thoroughly
  2. Cut the tape with rounded corners (sharp corners peel)
  3. Apply the tape on the outside of the jacket, over the tear
  4. Press firmly for at least 30 seconds to activate the adhesive
  5. For thorough repair, also apply tape on the inside

The result is functional and durable, if not invisible.

When professional repair makes sense

Some jacket repairs are worth paying for:

  • Leather jackets (specialist skills required)
  • High-value technical jackets (Arc’teryx, Patagonia) where manufacturers offer repair services
  • Vintage or designer jackets with significant resale or sentimental value
  • Repairs to complex construction (zipper failures, lining replacement, structural seam failures)

A good tailor or alteration specialist will repair most jacket issues for between twenty and a hundred pounds. For valuable jackets, this is excellent value compared to replacement.

Down jackets benefit particularly from prompt repair; one small tear ignored becomes many lost feathers and reduced warmth.

Use the manufacturer's waxed cotton dressing (Barbour Thornproof for Barbour jackets, similar products from other makers). Warm the jar of wax by placing it in hot water to soften the contents. Apply the wax in thin layers with a soft cloth, working with the grain of the fabric, especially over the patched area. Use a hair dryer or hot air gun to spread and absorb the wax. Wipe off excess. Leave to set overnight. Light reapplication may be needed for the first few weeks until the area equilibrates with the rest of the jacket.

Surprisingly often, no. Heavily patched jackets become beautiful in their own right, particularly workwear-style jackets in cotton or wool. The patches become part of the character, the jacket has obvious history, and a well-curated patched jacket is genuinely fashionable in some circles. The Japanese boro tradition celebrates exactly this kind of accumulated repair as a form of beauty. If structural integrity is intact (the jacket still closes, the seams are sound), continued patching is reasonable. Eventually a jacket reaches the end, but most heavily patched jackets have years of life remaining.
