Most "broken" zips are not broken. They are misaligned, stuck, or have a worn slider, and each problem has its own fifteen-minute fix.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Repairing a Broken Zip

The zip on my favourite winter coat stopped closing properly last December. The two halves seemed to be functioning, but as I pulled the slider up, the teeth behind it would unzip again. A useless zip. The coat was otherwise in excellent condition.

A friend who works in alterations told me, when I described the symptom, that the zip itself was almost certainly fine; the slider had simply worn and no longer pinched the teeth tightly enough to hold them closed. The repair was a five-pound replacement slider and twenty minutes of careful work. The coat has functioned perfectly since.

Most “broken” zips are not broken. They have one of four common problems, each with its own fix. Knowing which problem you have determines whether the repair is a five-minute fix, a thirty-minute one, or a job for a tailor.

The four common zip problems

1. Stuck slider. The slider will not move smoothly up or down the teeth. Often a fabric thread is caught, or the slider has accumulated debris.

2. Worn slider. The slider moves but the teeth do not stay closed behind it. The slider has worn slightly and no longer pinches the teeth firmly enough.

3. Misaligned teeth. The teeth on one side have been pulled out of alignment, often from forcing the slider. The zip will not close because the teeth do not meet correctly.

4. Missing teeth or damaged tape. Some teeth are gone, or the fabric tape that holds the teeth has torn. This is the most serious failure and often requires replacement of the whole zip.

The first three are usually DIY repairs. The fourth often needs professional alteration or replacement.

Diagnosing your problem

Look at the zip carefully. Run the slider up and down. Observe:

  • Does the slider feel stuck at a specific point, or moves smoothly but does not close the teeth behind?
  • Are the teeth even and undamaged?
  • Is the fabric tape on either side of the teeth intact, or torn?
  • If you pull the closed teeth apart by hand at the bottom of the zip, do they hold or come apart?

The answers tell you which problem you have.

Problem 1: stuck slider

Look closely at the slider. Is a thread of fabric caught in it? This is the most common cause; the slider has bitten into the fabric next to the zip and cannot move past.

To free a fabric-caught slider:

  1. Stop trying to force the slider; you will pull more fabric in
  2. Look at where the fabric is caught
  3. Use a pair of small scissors or tweezers to gently pull the caught fabric out
  4. If the fabric is deeply caught, you may need to work it free in small motions, easing the slider slightly back and forth while pulling the fabric

Once the fabric is free, the slider should move normally. Apply a small amount of pencil graphite (rub a pencil along the teeth) or candle wax along the teeth to lubricate and prevent recurrence.

If the slider is stuck without obvious fabric, it may have rust or debris. Run the slider through a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water; the abrasive action removes debris. Rinse, dry, lubricate.

Problem 2: worn slider

The classic symptom: you zip the slider all the way up, look at the closed teeth behind it, and find they have already unzipped themselves. The slider is no longer pinching the teeth tightly enough.

The fix: replace the slider, or pinch the existing slider tighter.

To pinch the existing slider tighter: use a pair of pliers. Carefully squeeze the back of the slider (the part where the teeth come out from) from both sides. Squeeze gently and check; if the teeth now meet and stay closed, the repair is done. If not, squeeze slightly more.

The risk: over-squeezing damages the slider, and may prevent it from moving at all. Squeeze in small increments and test frequently.

If pinching does not work, replace the slider entirely. New sliders cost two to five pounds and are available from haberdasheries or online. Match the size and type to your zip (zip sizes are stamped on the slider; common sizes are 3, 5, 8, 10).

To replace a slider on a separating zip (like a coat zip with two sides that come apart):

  1. Open the zip fully (separate the two halves at the bottom)
  2. Slide the old slider off the top of one side
  3. If the zip has a stop at the top, you may need to remove the stop with pliers
  4. Slide the new slider onto the same side from the top
  5. Replace the top stop, or sew a small stop with thread

For non-separating zips (most trouser flies, dress zips), removing the old slider requires either cutting the slider off (destructive) or removing the stops at the top, which is more involved.

Problem 3: misaligned teeth

If the teeth on one side bend or curl, the slider cannot mesh them with the other side, and the zip fails to close.

To straighten misaligned teeth:

  1. Look carefully at the teeth on both sides
  2. Identify the bent or curled tooth/teeth
  3. Use small needle-nose pliers to gently straighten the bent tooth
  4. If multiple teeth are bent, work on each one individually
  5. Test the slider after each straightening

Misaligned teeth often happen when force is applied to a stuck zip. Stop forcing zips; the time you save by not fighting through a stuck zip is more than recovered by not needing to repair it later.

Problem 4: missing teeth or torn tape

If teeth are missing (especially near the bottom of the zip where they take most stress), the zip cannot close past that point. Some missing teeth can be worked around (the zip becomes shorter but functional); most require full zip replacement.

Full zip replacement is a more involved sewing job. It requires removing the old zip stitching, fitting the new zip, and re-stitching. For jeans, jackets, and bags, this is a job for a tailor; the cost is usually fifteen to thirty pounds and produces excellent results.

For sentimental or expensive items, professional repair is worth the price. For inexpensive items, the labour cost may exceed the value of the garment.

Prevention

The habits that prevent zip damage:

  • Do not force a stuck zip. Stop, find the problem, and address it
  • Lubricate zips occasionally with pencil graphite or candle wax
  • Keep zips closed when washing the garment (they are less likely to catch on other items)
  • Replace cheap zips before they fail; some quality issues are inherent in the original component

For valuable items or where DIY has failed, this is excellent value. Most local alteration shops have done thousands of zip replacements and can produce neat results that look factory-finished.

Metal zips have individual metal teeth attached to fabric tape; they are strong, traditional, and used on jeans, leather jackets, and heavy-duty applications. Plastic zips have moulded plastic teeth; they are lighter, often more flexible, and used on most coats, dresses, and bags. Plastic zips break more often than metal ones, but metal zips can rust in damp conditions. Match the replacement to the original type for best aesthetics.

Almost always a worn slider. The slider has fatigued from many cycles and no longer holds the teeth closed under the tension of normal movement. Pinch the slider slightly with pliers (gentle, gradual squeezes; test after each squeeze) or replace it. Trouser fly zips work hard; expect to replace them every 5-10 years on heavily worn trousers.
