How to Prepare Your Car for Winter (Without Spending a Fortune)
Winter is hard on cars in surprisingly specific ways. Forty pounds of preparation in October prevents most of the trouble in January.
British winters are not extreme by European standards. Snow happens but rarely settles for long. Temperatures rarely stay below freezing for weeks. The roads are gritted aggressively. By the standards of Scandinavia or Eastern Europe, our winters are gentle. And yet, every January, the AA and the RAC see their busiest weeks of the year, with thousands of breakdowns from problems that almost all could have been prevented with a single hour of attention in late October.
The culprits are predictable. Batteries that were already weak going into the cold. Tyres that were borderline on tread. Wipers that streaked all summer and now cannot cope with rain plus salt spray. Coolant that has been topped up with tap water and now no longer has the right antifreeze concentration. Each of these is a five-pound problem with a five-hundred-pound consequence.
The good news is that winter preparation, done properly, is genuinely inexpensive. A reasonable budget for the whole annual winter check is around forty pounds, and the work itself takes a Saturday morning. Below is the routine I do on my own car every year in mid-October, sometimes early November.
The battery, first and most important
Winter is the season when batteries reveal their weaknesses. A battery that was marginal in August is often dead by December, because cold weather both reduces a battery’s effective capacity and increases the starting load on it. The most common breakdown call-out in winter, by a large margin, is a flat battery.
The check is quick. Look at the date on your battery; if it is over five years old, it is on borrowed time. Visit a garage or auto parts shop that offers free battery testing (most do). They will put the battery under load and tell you whether it is producing the cranking amps it should. A battery that tests weak in October is one that will fail in January.
If your battery is on its way out, replace it now rather than waiting. A new battery in October costs the same as one in February, but you do it on a dry Saturday in your driveway rather than at 7 am in a hospital car park with the temperature at minus three. Coolant and antifreeze
The coolant in your engine is not just there to keep the engine cool. It also prevents the water in the system from freezing in winter, which would crack the engine block. Modern coolants are typically a mix of water and ethylene glycol (or propylene glycol), with the mix usually 50/50, which protects down to around minus 35 degrees Celsius.
Over years, if coolant has been topped up with tap water or simply replaced gradually as the system has lost a bit, the antifreeze concentration drifts. A coolant that started at 50/50 may, after five years of topping up, be 70 percent water and 30 percent antifreeze. That still protects down to around minus 15, which is fine for most UK winters but starts to be marginal in a hard frost.
The test is easy. A coolant tester (a simple plastic bulb tool with a float inside) costs about five pounds and tells you instantly what concentration you have. Pop the radiator cap when the engine is cold, dip the tester, squeeze the bulb, and read the float. If the protection is down to minus 20 or weaker, top up with neat antifreeze (the same type already in the system, matched by colour) rather than diluted.
Tyres and tread depth
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6 mm, but in winter you genuinely want 3 mm or more. Tread depth has an enormous effect on how a car copes with standing water, slush, and partly frozen surfaces. A tyre at 2 mm of tread takes significantly longer to stop in the wet than the same tyre at 4 mm.
The 20p test is a quick check: push a 20p coin into the main groove of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, the tread is above 3 mm. If you can see the outer band clearly, the tread is below 3 mm, and the tyre is approaching the end of its useful winter life. Replace marginal tyres before winter rather than during it; January is the worst time of year to discover you need a new tyre at short notice.
Winter tyres (proper M+S marked tyres with the snowflake symbol) are increasingly affordable and dramatically better in cold conditions than summer or all-season tyres, especially below 7 degrees Celsius where summer rubber compounds stiffen up. For most UK drivers, all-season tyres (the M+S marked compromise) are a sensible middle ground that gives noticeably better winter performance than summer tyres without needing to be swapped out twice a year. Wipers and screen wash
Winter is the hardest season on wipers, because they have to deal with road salt spray, frozen rain, partly thawed slush, and gritty residue from gritter lorries. A wiper that streaked in October will be much worse in January. Replace marginal wipers in October; the cost is around fifteen to twenty pounds for a pair of decent blades. The screen wash matters equally. In summer, a weak mix is fine. In winter, a screen wash bottle that has frozen is at best useless and at worst can damage the washer pump and pipes. Use a winter-strength concentrate, mixed to give frost protection down to at least minus 15 degrees (usually a 1:4 dilution with water, but check the bottle). Buy enough to refill once or twice through the winter; winter salt and road grime use screen wash much faster than summer use does.
Lights, all of them
Winter is dark. You drive home from work in the dark, you drive to work in the dark for several months, you drive on country roads where nothing but your own headlights illuminate the road. Every single bulb on the car becomes safety-critical.
Walk around the car with the lights on. Dipped beam, full beam, fog lights front and rear, indicators, brake lights, reversing lights, number plate light, interior lights. A failed bulb in winter is far more serious than the same bulb in summer because of the darkness. Replace any that have failed; bulbs are usually under ten pounds and most are fitted in five minutes. The winter emergency kit
In a UK winter, the chance that you actually get properly stranded is small. The chance that you have a small inconvenience that becomes uncomfortable is much higher. A modest emergency kit in the boot, costing about thirty pounds in total, makes everything much easier.
- An ice scraper and a soft brush for snow. The credit card scraping people resort to in the morning is bad for the windscreen.
- A pair of work gloves for changing a tyre.
- A high-visibility vest, ideally one per regular passenger.
- A small torch, ideally a wind-up one that does not depend on batteries.
- A blanket or sleeping bag in the boot, in case of a long wait for recovery.
- A small bottle of water and some long-life snacks (cereal bars, biscuits).
- A phone charger that works with the car (a basic USB to car-charger cable is fine).
- A bag of cat litter, if you frequently drive on rural roads where you might get stuck in snow; it provides traction under wheels far better than salt or grit.
The kit lives in a small bag in the boot all winter and is taken out in spring. Most years you will not use any of it. The years you do use it, you will not regret the thirty pounds.
Salt and the bodywork
UK roads are gritted with rock salt during winter, and salt is corrosive. Every drive after a gritting night deposits a film of salt on the bodywork and the underside of the car. Over a season, this accelerates the corrosion of any exposed metal, especially around the wheel arches, the underside, and the rear of the doors.
A quick rinse with the hose, or a low-pressure wash, every week or two through winter dramatically reduces salt accumulation. You do not need to do a full wash; a five-minute rinse with the hose, paying attention to the underside and the wheel arches, is enough. Drive through a touchless car wash with under-body spray once a month if you cannot do it at home.
A coat of decent wax in October, applied to clean dry paint, makes the salt easier to rinse off all winter. The wax is a one-hour Saturday job and costs ten pounds. It protects the paint visibly more than people expect.
The total time and cost
If you do all of the above in one Saturday, the work takes about three hours. The cost, assuming you do not need a new battery or new tyres, is around forty to fifty pounds for screen wash, antifreeze top-up, replacement wipers, the emergency kit, and a coat of wax. The cost if you do need a battery is another seventy to a hundred pounds; if you need new tyres, more. But these are needed regardless; doing them in October means doing them on your terms, not on the AA’s.
The single biggest difference between drivers who have an easy winter and those who do not is the willingness to spend one Saturday in late October getting the car ready. Almost everyone says they will do it. Most people forget, get busy, postpone, and then deal with the consequences in January. If the test shows weaker protection, top up with neat antifreeze of the same colour and type as what is in the system. Never mix different colours or types; some are incompatible.
A few things. Check tyre pressures (a fortnight of cold and inactivity often shows a noticeable drop). Look under the bonnet for any obvious moisture or condensation. Start the car and let it idle for a minute before driving, especially in cold weather, to let oil circulate properly. Drive gently for the first few miles. If the car has been parked for a month or more, check the wiper rubber for any sticking to the windscreen (lift them before turning them on; trying to use stuck wipers can tear the rubber). A long-parked car appreciates a few minutes of attention before being asked to drive.
Modern keyless cars have this problem less. For cars with traditional locks, a small amount of graphite powder (cheap at any hardware shop) applied to the key and worked into the lock occasionally during autumn helps lubricate and displaces moisture. Avoid spraying WD-40 or similar oils into locks; they attract dirt and gum up over time. If a lock does freeze, gently warming the key with a lighter for a few seconds before inserting it usually melts the ice. Pouring hot water on a lock is not advised because the refrozen water can make the problem worse.
Battery and tyres, jointly. If forced to choose just one, the battery, because a flat battery on a cold morning is the most common and most disruptive winter problem. Have it tested in October at any auto parts shop (often free) and replace it if marginal. Tyres are close behind: a tyre at 2 mm of tread in October is dangerous by January, and replacement in advance is far cheaper and less stressful than a roadside discovery.
