A car battery that fails twice in a year is almost never a faulty battery. Six quiet causes account for most of the cases I have seen.

There is a particular sinking feeling that comes with hearing the click-click-click of a starter motor that has nothing left to give. The clock on the dashboard shows the time you should have been leaving, the windscreen is half scraped, and the car is going nowhere. Most people, after the second time it happens in a year, conclude that the battery has gone faulty and they need a new one. Sometimes that is true. Quite often, it is not.

An auto electrician in Warrington once told me he reckoned that around a third of the batteries he had replaced over his career had not actually needed replacing. They had been killed by something else that nobody had noticed, and the replacement battery would last only a few months before going the same way. The real problem is rarely the battery itself; the battery is usually the messenger.

How a car battery actually works (the short version)

A standard lead-acid car battery has two jobs. It stores enough energy to crank the engine over for a few seconds. Once the engine is running, the alternator (a small generator driven by the engine) takes over both supplying the car’s electrics and recharging the battery. If everything is working, the battery is recharged each time you drive, ready for the next start.

That cycle assumes three things are true. The battery itself is healthy. The alternator is producing enough current to recharge it. And the car is being driven long enough between starts for the recharge to complete. Failure in any of these three creates the symptoms of a “dying battery” without the battery being to blame.

The six real causes

Almost every recurring battery problem I have encountered turns out to be one of these. They are listed roughly in order of how often I see them.

  1. Short journeys, repeated. A cold start uses a lot of energy. The alternator needs roughly twenty to thirty minutes of driving to fully replace what the start used, longer in winter. If your daily driving is two short journeys of ten minutes each, the battery is being drained faster than it is being recharged. After a few weeks, the battery is permanently undercharged, which damages the lead plates inside and shortens its life. Eventually it cannot hold enough charge to start the car.
  2. An old battery still being asked to do a young battery’s work. Lead-acid batteries have a usable life of around five to seven years. After that, the internal chemistry degrades, and the battery holds less and less charge. You may have a battery that starts the car fine in summer but fails in November when cold weather demands more cranking energy. If your battery is older than five years and you are getting unreliable starts, suspect age.
  3. A parasitic drain. Modern cars draw a small amount of current even when switched off, to keep the clock, the radio memory, the alarm, and various computer modules alive. This is normal and small (usually under 50 milliamps). If something is wrong (a stuck relay, a glovebox light that does not turn off, a dashcam wired permanently live, a faulty alarm module), the drain can rise to several hundred milliamps and the battery will be flat after a few days of sitting. This is the most common cause of a battery that fails after the car has been parked for a week.
  4. A failing alternator. If the alternator is not producing enough voltage, the battery is never properly recharged regardless of how much you drive. A failing alternator often dims the headlights at idle, makes the dashboard battery warning flicker, and may produce a whining noise from the engine bay. A garage can test alternator output in five minutes.
  5. Corroded battery terminals. The terminals where the battery cables attach to the battery posts develop a fluffy green or white deposit over time. This is a poor electrical connection, and it can prevent both the starter from getting enough current to crank, and the alternator from charging the battery effectively. A wire brush, a small amount of vaseline applied to the cleaned terminals, and a ten-minute job solves it.
  6. Cold weather. A battery loses around 30 percent of its starting power at zero degrees, and more below freezing. A marginal battery that has been fine all summer suddenly fails on the first frost. This is not really a fault; it is a healthy battery telling you it has aged enough that it can no longer cope with cold conditions, and it is on borrowed time.

How to diagnose your specific case

Before buying a new battery, do this small sequence of tests yourself. It takes about half an hour.

  • Look at the battery itself. Find the date sticker, usually a small label on the top or side. A date older than five years is a strong candidate for end-of-life.
  • Inspect the terminals. Lift the rubber covers and look at the metal. If you see white, green, or grey deposits, clean them with a wire brush and reattach the cables firmly.
  • Check your typical journey pattern. If most of your driving is under fifteen minutes, you may be undercharging the battery. A weekly longer run, say thirty minutes on a dual carriageway, will keep the battery topped up.
  • If the car sits unused for more than five days at a time, a parasitic drain may be the issue. Try unplugging anything that has been added to the car since you bought it (dashcam, charger, aftermarket alarm) and see if the problem improves.
  • Visit a garage or an auto parts shop. Most will test the battery and the alternator for free, often in under ten minutes. This single test usually identifies the real problem.

What to do if your driving pattern is the cause

If you genuinely cannot avoid short journeys (lots of school runs, lots of commuter stops), you have two practical options. The cheaper is to plan a longer drive once a week to fully recharge the battery; a half-hour at 50 mph on a dual carriageway works well. The slightly more expensive is a small trickle charger that you plug in overnight once a fortnight, which keeps the battery topped up without you needing to change your driving. Decent trickle chargers cost between twenty and fifty pounds and pay for themselves in a single avoided battery replacement.

For cars used very rarely (classics, second vehicles, motorhomes), a permanent maintenance charger is genuinely worth it. They are designed to be plugged in for months at a time and keep the battery at exactly the right charge.

When the new battery is the answer

If your battery is over five years old, has been undercharged repeatedly, has been deeply discharged more than once or twice (left flat overnight), or has visible damage to the case, replacement is the right answer. Get the correct size and capacity for your car (the handbook lists this, and most retailers will look it up for you). Choose a reputable brand. The very cheapest batteries are often poorly made and will fail within a year or two.

Fitting is straightforward on most cars: disconnect the negative terminal first, then positive, lift the old battery out, fit the new one, connect positive first, then negative. Some modern cars need a battery registration procedure done with diagnostic equipment, which a garage can do in five minutes; without it, the car may not charge the new battery correctly. Check before fitting yourself.

That single observation is enough to give you a fortnight’s notice that a battery is on its way out.

The lesson the auto electrician taught me

Before you replace a battery that has only been failing for a few months, spend twenty minutes diagnosing why. A new battery that is fitted into a car with a parasitic drain, an undercharging alternator, or a short-journey driving pattern will go the same way as the old one, just slower. The battery is rarely the problem on its own. It is almost always a symptom of something else, and finding that something else is what stops the failure from repeating.

Frequently Asked Questions

A battery that is simply flat will usually recover with a long drive or an overnight charge, and will give normal voltage (12.6 volts or so) once recharged. A battery that is dead has internal damage, often a shorted cell, and will not hold a charge no matter how long it is connected. Garages and auto parts shops can do a load test, which puts the battery under realistic cranking load and measures whether voltage drops too far. This is a definitive test and is usually free. If a battery passes a load test but the car still struggles to start, the problem is almost certainly elsewhere.

For the car being jump-started, repeated deep discharges damage the battery further every time. Two or three jump-starts in the life of an otherwise healthy battery are fine; weekly jump-starts are a sign that something is wrong and need diagnosing properly. For the donor car, occasional jump-starting is harmless, but follow the correct procedure (positive to positive, negative to a body earth point on the dead car, not the negative terminal) to avoid sparks near the battery. Modern cars are sensitive to incorrect jump-starting and you can damage electronics.

Yes. Start-stop systems put extra demand on the battery because the engine restarts frequently, often dozens of times per journey. They require AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) or EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) batteries designed for the duty cycle. Fitting a normal lead-acid battery in a start-stop car will give a short battery life and may also trigger fault codes that disable the start-stop function. Always replace with the same type the car came with, or upgrade from EFB to AGM if budget allows. The handbook or a parts shop will confirm the correct type.

Intermittent overnight flats are often caused by a stuck relay or a glovebox or boot light that is failing to turn off when the lid is closed. Both are common. Spend an evening watching the car: when you close the door, watch all the lights inside until they go off. If anything stays lit (a footwell light, a boot light, a glovebox), you have your culprit. Less commonly, an aftermarket dashcam or charger wired to the always-live circuit can pull enough current to flatten a battery in two or three days of inactivity.

Five to seven years for a good-quality battery in normal use is typical, with seven to ten years possible in lightly used, gently treated cars. Heavy short-journey use, frequent cold starts, or repeated deep discharges shorten this considerably, sometimes to three or four years. Hot climates also age batteries faster than cold ones. If yours is older than seven years and starting becomes hesitant, replacement is sensible even if it has not fully failed yet. A planned replacement on a Saturday is much less stressful than a surprise one on a Tuesday morning.
