The Real Reason Your Shower Has Lost Pressure
A weak shower is rarely a pump problem. It is almost always one of three small things, and the fix is usually fifteen minutes.
For two years our shower had been getting steadily weaker. It started as a vague suspicion (was it ever this slow?) and ended as a genuine inconvenience (rinsing shampoo out had become a small project). My wife eventually said something, the way she does, which translates roughly as “if you don’t fix it, I will.” I rang a plumber. He came round on a Saturday morning, looked at the shower for about thirty seconds, unscrewed something at the end of the hose, held it up to the light, made a small contented sound, and handed it back to me clean. The shower has been brilliant ever since.
Total cost: zero pounds. Total time: less than ninety seconds. He charged me for the callout, made a cup of tea, and apologised that he had not been able to find anything more impressive to do. That morning permanently changed how I think about shower pressure.
The vast majority of weak showers are not pump problems, mixer problems, or pressure problems. They are limescale problems, and they live in three small parts that almost anybody can take apart and clean. The article below walks through them in the order a plumber would check.
The shower head, which is almost always the culprit
Of every weak shower I have ever helped a friend diagnose, perhaps eighty percent have been the shower head itself. The little nozzles on the face of the head are very small, and even a thin layer of limescale or soap scum across them dramatically reduces the flow.
To check, unscrew the shower head from the hose. On almost every domestic shower this is a single connection at the end of the hose; turn anticlockwise by hand. Hold the head up to the light. Look at the holes from the inside. If they are partially blocked, you will see white or grey deposits clogging them. Sometimes the deposits are visible from the outside too, especially in hard water areas.
To clean, fill a bowl or a freezer bag with white vinegar (or a one-to-one mix of vinegar and warm water). Submerge the shower head completely. Leave for two hours, ideally overnight. Take it out, scrub the face gently with an old toothbrush, and rinse thoroughly. For really stubborn limescale, run a thin needle or wire through each nozzle from the inside. Reattach to the hose.
In hard water areas, this should be a quarterly ritual. In soft water areas, twice a year is plenty.
The hose, which is the next culprit
If cleaning the head does not solve it, the hose itself may have limescale build-up inside. Hoses are flexible silicone or rubber tubing wrapped in a metal sleeve, and the internal bore can scale up just as the head does.
Disconnect the hose at both ends. Hold one end to a tap and run water through it under pressure. Most healthy hoses will let water gush through. A scaled hose will give a thin, restricted stream. If you see limescale flakes coming out, work warm water through repeatedly until it runs clean.
For badly scaled hoses, a vinegar soak is harder because of the metal sleeve. The simpler approach is to replace the hose. New ones cost about five pounds at any plumbing supplier, and they screw on identically to the old one. A new hose every five years in hard water areas is a sensible habit.
The filter in the mixer
This is the one people miss. Behind almost every shower mixer is a small mesh filter that catches debris before the water reaches the cartridge. Over years, these filters collect a layer of sediment and limescale that restricts flow.
To access, you usually need to shut off the water supply first (either at isolation valves under the bath or, if those do not exist, at the main stopcock). Then remove the mixer body. On some mixers the filter is behind a small chrome cap; on others it is in the supply connection at the back. Consult the manufacturer’s diagram if you have it.
The filter is usually a small fine mesh disc the size of a 5p piece. Pull it out gently with tweezers or fine-nosed pliers. Soak it in vinegar for an hour. Brush it lightly. Replace. This step alone, on a five-year-old mixer that has never been cleaned, can restore pressure by twenty or thirty percent.
The cartridge inside the mixer
If filters and head and hose are all clean and the shower is still weak, the mixer cartridge itself may be partially scaled. The cartridge is the moving heart of the mixer; it blends hot and cold water and controls temperature and flow. In a thermostatic mixer, it is also the thermostat.
Cartridges can be cleaned, but on most mixers it is honestly easier to replace them. A replacement cartridge for a typical domestic mixer costs between fifteen and forty pounds and is mostly a screw-in part. The job takes thirty to forty-five minutes if you have done it before; if not, it is a sensible point to call a plumber, because reassembly under pressure is unforgiving.
Other less common causes
If everything above has been cleaned or replaced and the shower is still weak, the cause is usually one of three things further upstream.
- Low mains pressure, which is a problem of the supply itself rather than the shower. Check by running the cold tap nearest the mains; if it is also weak, the issue is in the supply line and may need a plumber.
- A failing pump, in showers that have one. Pumps tend to fail in clear ways (loud humming with no improvement, or no operation at all), but they can also fail gradually. A pump older than fifteen years that has slowed steadily over the past year is suspect.
- A partially closed isolation valve. Somebody at some point may have part-closed the valve under the bath or behind the panel and forgotten about it. Track the supply pipe back from the shower and check each valve. The valve handle should be in line with the pipe; if it is at an angle, the valve is part-closed.
The order in which to actually check
To save you working through the article again when the shower fails:
- Take off the shower head and soak it in vinegar.
- Run water through the disconnected hose; replace if the bore is scaled.
- Find and clean the mesh filter behind the mixer.
- If the problem persists, the cartridge may need replacing.
- Check isolation valves and mains pressure if everything else is clean.
Steps one to three together take about thirty minutes if you have never done it before, and they solve nineteen out of twenty cases of “the shower has lost pressure.”
How to keep it from happening again
Limescale is the enemy, and it is more or less unavoidable in hard water areas. The mitigations, in order of effort:
The simplest is to wipe the shower head down with a soft cloth after each use. This removes the moisture that limescale forms from. It takes ten seconds and noticeably extends the time between needed soaks.
The next step is to descale the shower head every three months. Set a reminder. The job takes about five minutes of your attention and two hours of the head sitting in a bowl.
The most significant step is fitting a water softener or a magnetic conditioner on the mains supply. Softeners are a serious investment (three to five hundred pounds installed) and they need salt top-ups, but they extend the life of every water-using appliance in the house, not just the shower. In a genuinely hard water area, they pay for themselves through reduced kettle scaling, longer kettle life, longer dishwasher life, longer boiler life, and less limescale in every shower, tap, and toilet. A magnetic conditioner is a cheaper alternative; opinions vary on how effective they are, but in our last house one made a noticeable difference to kettle scaling at least.
The plumber who fixed our shower in ninety seconds said something I have remembered. “Most of what I get called for I do not really get paid for. People just need to know to take the shower head off and look at it.” A small look, a small soak, a small brush, and the shower is back to itself. It is one of the most satisfying ten-minute jobs in a house. The exception is some specialised coatings (gold, brass, or certain matte finishes) where prolonged vinegar exposure can dull the surface. For those, check the manufacturer's instructions; many recommend a milder citric acid solution instead. A quick vinegar soak of an hour or two for a regular chrome head is fine and has been done countless times by countless people. Rinse thoroughly after soaking, and avoid leaving it submerged for days at a time.
If you have a gravity-fed system (a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard fed from a header tank in the loft), you may have a pump fitted in the airing cupboard or under the bath to boost the pressure. Listen when the shower runs; a pump is audible as a steady hum. If you are on a combi boiler or unvented cylinder, you almost certainly do not have a pump; the shower runs straight from mains pressure. Almost always one of two things. Either somebody else is using water elsewhere in the house (flushing the toilet, running the kitchen tap) and your cold supply is being diverted, or the thermostatic cartridge in the mixer is scaled or failing and is struggling to balance the hot and cold inputs. The first is just about coordinating use; the second usually means cleaning or replacing the cartridge. If the temperature swings happen even when no other taps are running, the cartridge is the suspect.
Sometimes, but with caution. A high-pressure or low-flow head with smaller, fewer nozzles can give a noticeably stronger feel even on a moderate supply. But if the underlying issue is a blocked filter or scaled hose, the new head will deliver no more water than the old one; it will just concentrate what little there is into fewer nozzles. Always clean the existing setup first. Only then is it worth experimenting with a different head, and the new head will perform much better starting from a clean system.
Yes, and it usually points to something specific in that bathroom rather than the supply. Either an isolation valve has been part-closed (check the valves under the bath and in any access panel), a single filter or cartridge has clogged, or there is a partial blockage in the supply pipe to that room. A sudden drop after work was done in the house (decorating, kitchen plumbing) is particularly suspicious; somebody may have closed a valve to do their work and not fully reopened it.
