Brakes give you weeks of warning before they fail. Knowing what to listen for is the difference between a fifty-pound job and a five-hundred-pound one.

The thing about brakes is that they almost never fail without warning. They squeak, they squeal, they grind, they pull, they feel different under the foot. They send out a steady stream of small messages over weeks and months. Most drivers ignore the early messages, drive on the later ones, and end up paying significantly more when something has worn well past the point where it could have been swapped cheaply.

A brake job caught at the right moment, before the pads have worn into the discs, is a routine bit of maintenance that costs less than a decent restaurant meal. The same job caught six months too late, when the discs are scored and the calipers have started to drag, can run to six hundred pounds. The difference is entirely in the hands of the driver who decides whether to listen or not.

How a brake actually works

Most modern cars have disc brakes on the front and either disc or drum brakes on the rear. On a disc brake, a metal disc is bolted to the wheel hub and spins with the wheel. A caliper straddles the disc, and inside it are two brake pads. When you press the pedal, hydraulic fluid pushes the pads against both sides of the disc, friction does the rest, and the car slows down. The pads are the consumable; they wear down a tiny amount with every brake application.

Brake pads have a lifespan of roughly 20,000 to 60,000 miles depending on driving style, traffic, and the type of pad. Front pads usually wear about twice as fast as rear pads, because the front brakes do most of the work of stopping the car. Discs last considerably longer, usually two or three sets of pads, but they do wear too, and a heavily worn disc will eventually need replacing alongside the pads.

The five warning signs, in order of urgency

  1. A high-pitched squeal when braking gently. Most pads have a small metal tab called a wear indicator. When the pad wears down to a certain level, the tab starts to contact the disc, producing a thin, irritating squeal. This is the brake telling you it has approximately a thousand miles of life left. It is the cheapest moment to act. A pad replacement at this stage is a routine job, perhaps eighty to a hundred and fifty pounds depending on the car.
  2. A juddering pedal when braking from speed. A pulsing sensation through the brake pedal as the car slows means one of the discs has warped or worn unevenly. Warping happens when discs get extremely hot and then cool rapidly, which can happen if you have done several hard stops in succession or driven through deep water with hot brakes. A judder is not immediately dangerous, but braking distance is increased and the issue will not get better on its own. Discs and pads usually need replacing together.
  3. The car pulls to one side under braking. A car that pulls left or right when you brake usually has a stuck or sticking caliper on the opposite side. The brake on one side is applying harder than the brake on the other. This is a safety issue and needs attention quickly; a stuck caliper continues to drag even when you are not braking, which wears the pad and disc on that side very fast and can also cause the wheel to get extremely hot, sometimes hot enough to damage the wheel bearing or the brake fluid.
  4. A grinding noise when braking. Grinding is the sound of metal-on-metal. It means the brake pads have worn through their friction material and the metal backing plate of the pad is now in direct contact with the disc. This is past the point where pad replacement alone is enough; the disc will be scored, often deeply, and will also need replacing. A grinding car needs to come off the road within a day or two, not next week.
  5. A spongy or soft pedal that travels too far before biting. If the brake pedal feels mushy, or you can press it slowly all the way to the floor, you have either air in the hydraulic system or a leak somewhere. Both are urgent. Air can be introduced through low brake fluid, a recent repair done badly, or a developing seal failure. A leak (often visible as a wet patch behind a wheel or on the inside of a tyre) is a genuine emergency. Do not drive a car with a properly soft pedal; have it recovered.

What you can check yourself in five minutes

You do not need to take a wheel off to do a basic brake check. Standing in front of the front wheel and looking through the spokes, you can see most of what you need.

  • The disc itself should look smooth and shiny on the surface where the pads contact it. A bright, mirror-like surface is normal. Heavy scoring (deep grooves you can feel with a fingernail) means the disc is worn.
  • You can see the outer edge of the brake pad. The friction material should be at least 3 mm thick, and ideally 5 mm or more. If it looks paper-thin, replacement is imminent.
  • There should be no visible fluid weeping from behind the wheel, no orange rust streaks running down inside the wheel, and no smell of hot metal after a normal drive.

Do this with all four wheels once a month, ideally as part of the same Sunday morning car routine we wrote about, and you will catch most brake issues weeks before they become expensive.

The brake fluid most people forget

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water from the air over time. After about two years, the absorbed water lowers the fluid’s boiling point significantly, which means the fluid can boil during hard braking, which means the pedal goes spongy at the worst possible moment. Most manufacturers recommend a brake fluid change every two years, and most owners never have it done. It is a cheap service (often under fifty pounds) and one of the most overlooked safety items on a modern car.

Check the brake fluid reservoir under the bonnet during your monthly check. It is a small plastic tub, usually translucent so you can see the level without opening it. If the level is between MIN and MAX, fine. If it is low, look further; either the brakes are worn (the fluid level drops slightly as the pads thin) or there is a leak.

What good braking habits look like

How you brake affects how long brakes last, by a factor of two or three. The slow brakers, who anticipate, lift off the throttle early, and apply the brakes gently and progressively, get sixty or seventy thousand miles from a set of pads. The hard brakers, who use the brakes as a speed regulator and slam them on at the last moment, replace pads twice as often.

Engine braking, lifting off the throttle in good time, and reading the road ahead are not just gentler on the car. They are also less stressful, and they significantly improve fuel economy too. Most professional drivers learn to use the brakes as little as possible, treating each brake application as a small cost to be minimised.

What to do when you hear something

The moment your brakes start telling you something new (a squeak that was not there last week, a slight pull, a small judder), book the car in. Not in three months, not when it gets worse, this week. A garage inspection is usually free or very cheap, takes ten minutes, and will tell you exactly what is happening. The combined cost of catching brake issues early, across a decade of car ownership, is hundreds of pounds less than letting them ripen.

Brakes are the one system on the car where the cost of catching the problem late goes up sharply. Engine issues caught late are expensive too, but they generally stay expensive in the same way. Brake issues caught late escalate: pads alone become pads and discs, then pads, discs, and a caliper, then a caliper rebuild plus a fluid flush plus a brake hose. Each step adds money. Listening early is genuinely free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Almost always no. Light surface rust forms on the discs overnight, especially after wet weather, and the first few brake applications scrub it off. Once the discs are clean, the squeak disappears. This is normal and not a sign of wear. The problem is when the squeak persists through a full drive, or when it is more of a continuous high-pitched whine rather than a brief morning protest. Continuous squealing suggests the wear indicator has started rubbing, which means the pads are due for replacement soon.

Front pads typically last 20,000 to 40,000 miles in mixed driving. Rear pads usually last 40,000 to 60,000 miles, sometimes more, because they do less of the work. Heavy town driving, lots of traffic, and aggressive braking style shorten the life significantly. Long motorway journeys and a gentle driving style can extend it well beyond the upper end of those figures. The mileage matters less than the wear; check thickness rather than relying on a schedule, and replace pads when they are visibly thin rather than at a fixed interval.

Always replace pads in pairs, both pads on a single axle at the same time. Replacing one side only causes uneven braking, which can pull the car under brakes. You do not have to replace front and rear at the same time; usually they wear at different rates anyway, and you replace whichever axle needs it. Discs should also be replaced in pairs across an axle if any disc has worn beyond its minimum thickness. A garage will tell you the disc condition when they remove the wheels for the pad change.

Ceramic pads produce less brake dust, are quieter, and last longer than standard pads, at roughly double the cost. They are a sensible upgrade if you keep a car for a long time, do mostly motorway and rural driving, and dislike the black dust that builds up on your wheels. Performance copper or sintered pads are designed for heavy use and high temperatures; they bite harder when warm but can be noisy and aggressive on discs in normal use. For most daily drivers, mid-range pads from a reputable brand are entirely fine.

On most cars the handbrake operates the rear brakes via a separate cable mechanism. Cables stretch over time, and a long pull on the handbrake (more than five or six clicks before it bites) usually means the cable needs adjustment. This is a quick job at a garage. Some modern cars have electronic parking brakes that self-adjust; if those feel different, it is more likely a fault that needs diagnostic equipment. A handbrake that fails to hold the car on a slope is a definite MOT failure and needs attention before the next test.
