Why Your Oven Won’t Heat Properly (and Six Things to Check First)
Most ovens that stop heating are not broken. They are misbehaving in one of six predictable, fixable ways.
The first time my oven started running cold, I assumed it was the element. The element is, after all, the part of the oven that makes the heat, and when heat stops, the element is the obvious suspect. After half an afternoon of fussing, ordering a part, and then realising I had ordered the wrong one, I discovered the actual problem was a small plastic clip that had snapped on the door latch. The oven was perfectly functional. It was just losing all its heat through a door that no longer sealed properly.
Oven problems are like this. They look like one thing and turn out to be another. Before you panic, before you call anyone, before you start ordering elements, there are six things to check in roughly this order.
1. The door seal and the latch
If the oven heats but takes far too long, or if the food cooks unevenly with one side noticeably underdone, suspect the door seal first. Open the oven and run your fingers around the rubber gasket on the door. It should be intact, springy, and free of large gaps. Burnt-on food can stop it sealing properly. Cuts or compressed sections mean it needs replacing. Test the door with a piece of paper held in the gap as you close it; you should feel firm resistance pulling it out.
While you are there, check the door hinges. If the door does not close fully flush, the hinges may have worn. On most ovens, the hinges can be replaced with the door removed, which itself usually comes off by pulling small clips on each hinge into the unlocked position and lifting the door away.
2. The temperature calibration
An oven set to 180 degrees may actually be running at 160, or 200. Cheap ovens drift more than expensive ones, and all ovens drift over years. Buy an oven thermometer for under fifteen pounds. Hang it in the centre of the oven. Set the oven to 180, wait twenty minutes for it to stabilise, and read the thermometer.
If the reading is more than 15 degrees off in either direction, the oven needs recalibrating. Many ovens have a calibration setting buried in the control panel; check the manual or search for your model number plus “calibration.” Some older ovens require a thermostat replacement, which is a relatively cheap part but a job for someone comfortable with appliance repair.
3. The heating element itself
Most electric ovens have two heating elements: a hidden bake element at the bottom and a visible grill element at the top. If one is failing, the oven may still seem to heat, but unevenly or slowly.
Switch the oven on and look. The visible grill element should glow red when activated. The bottom element is harder to see; turn off the oven, let it cool, and remove the bottom panel to inspect it. A failed element often has a visible break, bulge, or burn mark. Replacement is one of the cheapest oven repairs available; the part runs twenty to fifty pounds and slots in with two screws and two wire connections. Disconnect the oven from power before doing anything inside.
4. The fan, if you have a fan oven
Fan ovens distribute heat by circulating air with a small motor at the back. If the fan stops turning, hot air no longer circulates and food cooks unevenly. Switch the oven on with the door slightly open and listen. You should hear a low hum and feel air moving through the vents at the back.
If the fan is silent, the motor has failed. This is a repair that usually requires removing the rear panel inside the oven; not difficult, but again, disconnect from power first. Fan motors cost between thirty and seventy pounds. If you are not comfortable, a local appliance engineer will replace one in under an hour.
5. The igniter or the gas supply (gas ovens)
Gas ovens have an igniter that glows hot and ignites the gas. As igniters age, they glow more weakly, and the gas takes longer to light. Eventually they may stop igniting the gas at all, and the safety system shuts off the gas to prevent leaks.
If your gas oven is taking a long time to reach temperature, watch the igniter through the oven door when you first turn it on. It should glow bright orange within a minute. A weak orange or yellow glow means it is on its way out. Replacement is straightforward for a competent DIYer but I would strongly recommend any gas work be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer in the UK, or the equivalent qualification in your country. The cost of getting it wrong is much higher than the cost of paying a professional.
6. The wiring connector at the back
Behind every electric oven is a heavy wiring connection. Over years, the connections inside the terminal block can loosen or corrode, particularly if the oven has been moved or knocked. A loose connection can mean reduced power, intermittent heating, or strange behaviour.
Turn off the power at the consumer unit. Pull the oven out. Unscrew the cover over the wiring terminals at the back. Look for any signs of scorching, discoloured insulation, or loose screws. Tighten anything loose; replace anything visibly damaged. If any of this feels beyond your comfort, hire an electrician for a fifteen-minute inspection.
The order matters
Work through the list in roughly the order above. Door, thermostat, element, fan, igniter, wiring. The first three account for around seventy per cent of all oven heating problems we have seen. Most are cheap fixes. None requires you to throw away an oven that has years of life left in it.
If you have run through the list and still cannot identify the issue, the control board may have failed. That is a repair worth pricing carefully. A new control board can cost between a hundred and two hundred pounds. For a fifteen-year-old budget oven, that may not be worth it. For a newer or higher-end oven, it almost always is.

Usually a thermostat failing or, on fan ovens, a temperature limit switch that has triggered and not reset. The thermostat tells the elements when to cycle on and off; when it fails, it can cut power early. The limit switch is a safety device that cuts power if the oven gets too hot. If the limit switch has tripped, it may need manually resetting; check your manual for the reset procedure. If it has failed entirely, replacement is straightforward but requires opening the back panel.
For a large oven heating to 200 degrees from cold, fifteen to twenty minutes is roughly right. For a smaller oven, ten to fifteen. If yours takes substantially longer, the element may be weakening, the door seal may be failing, or you may have set a higher temperature than the oven indicator shows. An oven thermometer will tell you what is actually happening inside.
If the oven is new, expect a strong chemical smell for the first few uses as the protective coatings burn off. Run it empty at 200 degrees for an hour with the window open. If the smell appears on an older oven, suspect food spills or accumulated grease that needs cleaning out. If the smell is electrical or burning insulation, switch off immediately and check the wiring connections and the elements.
If you are comfortable disconnecting the oven from power and following clear instructions, yes. The element is one of the easier oven repairs. Disconnect at the consumer unit, remove the cover panel inside the oven, unscrew the element, disconnect the two wires, fit the new element, reconnect, replace the panel. Most jobs take under thirty minutes and save you an hour of labour from a professional. If at any point you are unsure, stop and call someone.
Not always. If both top and bottom elements have failed simultaneously, suspect either the thermostat or the control board first. If the oven receives no power at all (no lights, no display), check the consumer unit fuse and the connection at the back. If the oven lights up and the fan runs but no heat comes from the elements, the element or its relay has likely failed. Test the elements with a multimeter if you have one; an open circuit means the element is dead.
