How to Diagnose a Loud Washing Machine Without Calling Anyone
A washer that has started to thump, hum, grind, or rattle is usually telling you something specific. Here is how to translate.
A washing machine is not supposed to walk across the room. It is not supposed to sound like a small jet taking off. It is not supposed to rattle the cutlery in the drawer next door. When yours starts doing any of those things, it is not necessarily broken, and you do not necessarily need to call anyone. But you do need to listen carefully, because the kind of noise tells you almost everything about the cause.
I have helped enough friends and family members troubleshoot loud washers over the years to have built up a rough catalogue. Most fall into one of five patterns. Each has a different cause, and each can usually be sorted in under an hour.
Pattern one: a heavy thumping on the spin cycle
If the machine is fine through the wash but thumps badly when it tries to spin, the first suspect is always an unbalanced load. Stop the cycle. Open the door. Look inside. If you find a single heavy item (a duvet cover, a bath sheet, a pair of jeans) tangled in a corner of the drum, that is your problem. Redistribute, restart, and the noise should go.
If the load is balanced but the thumping persists, the next suspect is the suspension springs or shock absorbers that hold the drum inside the machine. Open the top of the machine (usually two screws at the back), or remove the front panel depending on your model. Look at the springs and shock absorbers connecting the drum to the cabinet. A broken spring is visible; a worn shock absorber will be loose if you wiggle it. Replacement parts cost between fifteen and forty pounds each, and most washers have two or four of them. This is a repair within reach of a confident DIYer with a few hours.
If you have a top-loader, the suspension system is a set of rods at the corners. Same principle: visible damage or wear means time to replace.
Pattern two: a grinding noise on the spin cycle
A loud grinding or whining noise during spin almost always points to one thing: the drum bearings. The bearings are inside a sealed cartridge at the back of the drum, and they allow the drum to spin smoothly. When they fail, the noise is unmistakable, often starting as a low hum and progressing to a metallic grinding.
Bearing replacement is the single biggest washing machine repair short of replacing the motor. It involves removing the drum, splitting the tub, pressing out the old bearings, and pressing in new ones. On many modern machines, the tub is sealed and cannot be split; the only option is to replace the entire drum assembly, which can cost more than the machine is worth. On older or higher-end machines, bearing replacement is genuinely worthwhile and adds five to ten years of life.
If your machine is under eight years old and otherwise sound, get a quote. If it is older and budget, you may be at the end of the line.
Pattern three: a rattling or clicking that comes and goes
A rattle or click that you notice during the agitation phase, particularly at lower speeds, is often something inside the drum that has worked free. Coins, paperclips, fragments of underwire from a bra, small toys. Stop the cycle, empty the drum, and reach in carefully.
The next place to look is the drain filter at the bottom front of the machine. There is almost always a kick panel behind which sits a filter; unscrew it slowly (with a towel underneath, because water will come out) and remove the contents. We have found everything from socks to small hair grips to a single AAA battery in ours over the years.
If you have checked the drum and the filter and the rattling continues, look at the rear of the machine for any loose accessories: the drain hose, the inlet hose, the water tray on top. Any one of those can vibrate against the cabinet and produce a noise that sounds like it is coming from inside the drum.
Pattern four: a humming or buzzing without movement
If the machine hums but does not actually spin or agitate, you may be looking at a pump issue or a motor issue. Try this test: empty the machine, set it to a short spin-only cycle, and listen. If you hear a hum but the drum does not turn, switch it off immediately to avoid damaging the motor.
The most common cause is a blockage in the drain pump. Coins or small objects that have gotten past the filter can lodge in the pump itself. On most machines, the pump is accessible from the front behind the kick panel, with the drain filter removed. With the filter out, you can usually see the impeller of the pump; try to turn it gently with a screwdriver. If it is stuck, an obstruction is the cause.
If the pump turns freely but the machine still does not spin, the motor or motor capacitor may be failing. This is a more involved repair and depends heavily on the model.
Pattern five: a sharp metallic clang during spin
If you hear a sharp, single clang followed by louder vibration, something has come loose inside the machine. Stop the cycle and unplug the machine. Open the door and look around the inside of the drum, particularly under the seal. The most common culprits are concrete counterweights that have come loose from their mountings, or shock absorber bolts that have backed out.
Concrete counterweights sit on top and inside the cabinet, and their job is to absorb the spin vibration of the drum. If the bolts holding them have loosened over years of vibration, the weights start to shift and bang against the cabinet on every spin. Tighten the bolts. If a counterweight has cracked or broken, replacement is straightforward but the part is heavy and awkward.
What to do before everything else
Two checks worth doing first, regardless of the symptom.
- Make sure the machine is level. Use a spirit level on the top. Adjust the feet if needed; most are screw-adjustable. A machine off-level by even a couple of degrees vibrates much more during spin.
- Make sure the transit bolts are removed. Almost every new washer ships with four red bolts at the back that lock the drum for transport. They have to be removed before first use. We have come across more than one second-hand washer that had been bought without those being taken out, leading to terrible noise and eventual damage.
When to stop and call
If you have worked through the visible checks and the noise is loud, sharp, or accompanied by smoke, an electrical smell, or visible movement of internal parts, stop. Unplug the machine. Call a qualified engineer. Internal damage to a washer can escalate quickly once components start failing in cascade.
For everything short of that, the listening approach above usually identifies the cause in under fifteen minutes. Most washers can be saved with a thirty-pound part and an hour of patience. The skill is not in the fixing; it is in correctly identifying which thirty-pound part you need.

Or the suspension system inside the machine has failed and the drum is no longer being held steady. Check the level first; that is the most common single fix. If that does not solve it, look at the springs and shock absorbers inside the cabinet.
A rough rule of thumb: do not spend more than half the price of a new equivalent. A new mid-range washer is around four hundred pounds. So a repair costing two hundred or less is reasonable if the rest of the machine is sound. For bearing replacement specifically, the part is cheap but the labour is substantial. If a quote comes back over two hundred and fifty pounds, the maths starts to favour replacement.
In general, top-loaders are louder during agitation and front-loaders are louder during high-speed spin. Modern front-loaders spin at speeds well above a thousand revolutions per minute, which produces a high-pitched whine that is normal. Modern top-loaders agitate aggressively, producing low rumbling. Neither should produce loud knocking, banging, or grinding. Sustained loud noise of any kind is a sign of an issue worth investigating.
