The most repairable appliance in most houses is the vacuum cleaner, and yet vacuums are also one of the most commonly replaced. There is a clear reason for this. Vacuums get visibly grubby, develop unpleasant smells, and lose suction over months in ways that feel like permanent decline. They are not. Almost every modern vacuum can be restored to near-new performance with about an hour of patient work and very few tools.

I have brought back three vacuums in the last few years that friends were about to throw out. Each took under an hour. None needed replacement parts in two of the three cases. The third needed a belt that cost four pounds.

Understand what your vacuum actually does

Vacuums work by creating a strong air flow through a small opening, which carries dust and debris from your floors into a container or bag. The air then passes through one or more filters to come out cleaner on the other side. The key word in that description is flow. Anything that restricts the flow at any point in the chain (the brush head, the hose, the container, the filters) reduces suction.

When a vacuum “loses suction,” ninety per cent of the time it has not actually lost suction. The motor is still pulling exactly as hard as it always did. Something in the chain is restricting the flow. Find the restriction and the suction returns.

Step one: empty everything and clean it

Start with the container or bag. Empty it completely. If it is a bagless vacuum, take the bin apart and wash it in warm soapy water; let it dry overnight before reassembling. If it is bagged, replace the bag if it is more than half full; vacuums lose noticeable suction at around the 60% mark.

Take out every filter. Most modern vacuums have at least two: a pre-motor filter (often a thick foam or pleated filter near the dust container) and a post-motor filter (often a HEPA filter at the exhaust). Both clog over time. The pre-motor filter is the most important; it sees almost everything before the motor does, and a clogged pre-motor filter is the most common single cause of weak suction.

Most filters can be washed in cool water, gently squeezed, and air-dried for 24 hours before refitting. Some HEPA filters cannot be washed; check before you do. Replacement filters cost between five and twenty pounds and last for years if you wash the pre-filter every couple of months.

Step two: clear the brush bar

The rotating brush bar at the bottom of the vacuum head is the part that does most of the surface agitation. Hair, threads, and fibres wrap around it relentlessly. After a few months of vacuuming, the bar may be choked with a thick rope of hair that prevents it from spinning freely.

Lay the vacuum on its back. With scissors, carefully cut along the length of the brush bar, parallel to it, and unwind the cut hair. On most brush bars you can remove the bar entirely (often with a screw at each end) for thorough cleaning. While the bar is out, check its bearings; they should spin freely. If they grind or stick, the brush bar will need replacement, which is a part that costs ten to thirty pounds and slots in by hand.

Step three: clear the hose and wand

This is the step almost everyone forgets. Disconnect the hose entirely. Run a long thin object (a broom handle, a long bent coat hanger, a length of rubber tubing) all the way through the hose. You may be surprised by what comes out: socks, gloves, large pieces of paper, an entire dust bunny the size of a tennis ball.

Hold the hose up to the light. You should be able to see daylight through every part of it. Any kink, dark patch, or visible blockage is what is restricting your flow.

While you have the hose off, also check the wand and the brush head. Run a finger along the inside of the connection where the wand joins the head; debris collects there. Use a thin brush to clear it.

Step four: check the belt (on uprights and certain canisters)

Upright vacuums and some canister vacuums use a rubber belt to drive the brush bar from the motor. Belts stretch, crack, and break over time. A vacuum with a worn belt may still suck air but will leave visible debris on carpets because the brush bar is no longer turning at full speed.

Most belts are accessible by removing a single plate on the underside of the head. Look at the belt. If it is glossy, cracked, or visibly stretched, replace it. Belts cost two to six pounds and are usually a 30-second swap. Even a perfectly intact belt should be replaced every couple of years; rubber ages whether you use it or not.

Step five: inspect for cracks and leaks

Any small crack in the body, hose, or wand of a vacuum causes air to leak in and reduces flow to the head. Run your hand along the hose and the body while the vacuum is running. You should feel no air movement except at the head and the exhaust. Any draft elsewhere is a leak.

Small cracks in hoses can sometimes be patched with electrical tape or shrink tubing as a temporary fix. Cracks in the body are harder; some can be glued, some need a replacement part. If your vacuum has lost performance gradually for no obvious reason, check the body carefully for hairline cracks.

Step six: the cordless battery question

If your vacuum is cordless, the battery is the most common failure point. Modern lithium-ion vacuum batteries last roughly four to six years of regular use before their capacity drops noticeably. A vacuum that used to run for twenty minutes and now runs for six has a tired battery.

Replacement batteries are available for almost every major brand. Original-manufacturer batteries cost between forty and a hundred and fifty pounds; third-party batteries are cheaper but quality varies. For a vacuum under five years old, replacing the battery often makes more sense than replacing the whole vacuum.

The smell problem

Vacuums develop smells. Hair, food debris, dust mites, and occasionally damp pet residue all end up in the dust container and filter. After a deep clean (everything washed and dried, fresh bag if applicable), put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton wool ball and place it in the dust container. The smell distributes pleasantly while you vacuum and disappears within a few days.

When repair is not worth it

If the motor itself is failing (loud grinding, smoke, intermittent operation), repair is usually not cost-effective unless the vacuum is high-end. Motor replacements on most domestic vacuums cost more than a replacement vacuum.

If the body has multiple cracks, repeated failures of different components, or the manufacturer no longer supplies parts, accept that this particular vacuum has reached the end. Recycle it properly; many local councils accept small appliances at recycling centres.

For everything else, the hour of patient work above will usually return your vacuum to near-new performance, often with no parts needed. Vacuums are one of the genuinely repairable categories of modern appliances. The skill required is patience, not expertise.

Take the vacuum apart following the manual, wash every washable filter, scrub the cyclone separator with a soft brush, and let everything dry completely. Performance should return to near-new.

Generally no. Vacuum bearings and motor bearings are sealed and self-lubricated. Adding oil can attract dust and cause more problems than it solves. The brush bar bearings, if they grind or stick, should be replaced, not oiled. The motor brushes (in vacuums that have them) wear naturally and are replaced as a part if needed.

Most commonly, the drive belt is slipping or has burned through. A slipping belt creates friction and heat against the motor pulley, producing a distinct burnt-rubber smell. Switch the vacuum off immediately. Open the head, inspect the belt. If it is glazed, melted, or broken, replace it. If the belt looks fine, the brush bar may be jammed and forcing the belt to slip; clear any hair, threads, or debris.

For higher-end vacuums (often more than two hundred pounds new), almost always yes. Independent vacuum repair shops can usually diagnose and fix common issues for a fraction of the replacement cost. For budget vacuums under a hundred pounds, the labour will usually exceed the value. The clear test: a shop will often diagnose for a small fee and then tell you honestly whether it is worth fixing.
